New photo ‘Extreme’ record-breaking 38C heatwave strikes Melbourne – 14C above average

Southern Australia continues to swelter through extreme heat ahead of the weekend, with Melbourne expected to record temperatures 14C above the December average.

The Victorian capital is forecast to reach 38C on Friday, when it's usually about 24C this time of year.

Residents were forced to sleep through the hottest start to summer in 24 years on Thursday night.

Weatherzone meteorologist Joel Pippard said the warm temperatures in Melbourne were regular for December but not typically recorded this early into summer.

'The last three years have reached about 38C in December (in Melbourne),' Mr Pippard told Daily Mail Australia.

'The record is 43.7C, that's a very old record, that's 1876.'

'(The average temperature) is 24C so we're looking at 14C above average which is incredibly high.'

Mr Pippard said Thursday was the hottest summer night recorded in Melbourne since 1994.

The Bureau of Meteorology tweeted: 'An overnight minimum of 26.1°C degrees in Melbourne recorded 12:05am.'

'Last time we sweltered through a warmer night was 29th January this year (27.8°C ). The previous warmer night this early in summer was 26.6°C.'

The Bureau have released severe fire warnings for parts of Victoria.

Mr Pippard warned residents in Victoria should remain vigilant amid the sweltering conditions.

'Pretty typical in these sorts of circumstances, people should keep hydrated, they should avoid direct sunlight,' he said.

'It's advisable to check on elderly neighbours and vulnerable people.

'It's about being smart not over-exacerbating, don't do any vigorous exercise.'

Mr Pippard said a change was due to come through but it would be gradual.

'There's a really weak southerly change expected this evening at around 7,' he said.

'That'll bring the overnight temperature down a bit... and a more substantial change that happens tomorrow at around midday until 2pm.'

In Tasmania, Hobart tallied it's hottest start to summer in eleven years on Thursday recording 31C.

Sydney's weather has been quite average with a high of 24C on Friday with rainfall expected towards the middle of next week.

While Brisbane is witnessing cooler temperatures, northern Queensland could be at risk as a trough along the coast will bring rainfall each day, easing the state of the intense heatwave.
