New photo DON’T be seduced by sequins and DO use cash back sites – how to bag a bargain in the Christmas sales, according to experts

NO matter how prepared we are for bracing the Boxing Day sales, we always end up exhausted in the middle of a jam-packed shopping centre, queuing in the cold at 5am or screaming at the computer.

So this year, we chatted to some of the biggest names in retail to hear all about their expert tips – print them, laminate them and keep them with you at all times.

Do make use of a wish list or saved items

“Fill your wishlist with everything you like the look of – as though you’re heading to the changing room with an armful of clothes,” says Emma Watkinson, CEO and co-founder of SilkFred.

“Once you have the ultimate selection of items, start cutting pieces that you don’t love.

“That way, you don’t miss any deals and you avoid panic buying items you don’t actually want.”

“Classic styles can last years, meaning that they’re not only great staple pieces for your wardrobe but also savvy investments,” explains Emma.

“Items that can be styled in a variety of ways and for multiple occasions are always worth your money.

“Look for timeless pieces that never go out of style – items such as structured blazers, quality knitwear, or a classic little black dress.

“These are styles that looked great 10 years ago and will still look great 10 years in the future.”

Do be patient and hunt for a bargain

“Advertising is such a strong aspect, especially these days,” explains Charlie Stopford Sackville – founder of price drop alert app, PIWoP.

“Be patient, hunt around and compare sites from one another.

“Some may be offering special delivery, whereas others are simply slashing prices.

“If you’re in a shopping centre, begin to map out where the shops are and what pieces you’re truly looking for.

“Another tip is to browse for the products online beforehand.

“Going blindly into a shop could mean you’re wasting a lot of time searching endlessly for products – a little research before you set off could save you greatly!”

Do auto-complete your details to checkout faster

“When buying from websites where time is of the essence (like purchasing concert tickets or if there’s a flash sale), make sure all of your details are stored in your browsers auto-complete settings,” explains Zak Edwards, managing director at PrezzyBox.

“So, if you are in a race to get your favourite item, then you can check out quickly by auto-completing all of the necessary address and payment fields.”

Don’t forget the cash back sites

“Make sure you shop through a cash back site so you can get lots of cash back on your orders,” advises Zak.

“If you can squeeze a voucher code in there too then that’s even more discount.”

Don’t do all your shopping straight away

“Sometimes shopping early will get you some fantastic deals, but as some stores start, other companies may follow suit and match price or reduce prices further so there is no ideal time to buy!” Explains Helen Dewdney, author of How to Complain: the Essential Consumer Guide to Getting Refunds, Redress and Results.

“Give it a week and what you’ve just bought will either be sold out or reduced further!

“So spread the risk and buy some things now and wait until later for others.”

Don’t get carried away

“Have a price in mind for the amount you are prepared to spend on an individual or total items,” explains Helen, who also runs The Complaining Cow consumer website.

“It is easy to get carried away especially in store as retailers put out items to entice you and that’s when you are most likely to buy things you don’t want or need!

“Keep an eye on your list of items and prices!”

Bring on Boxing Day…

Earlier this week, we told you about the Marks & Spencer’s animal-print ankle boots are a Christmas must-have… and they’re STILL available online.

We also revealed millionaire football CEO Carolyn Radford says she ‘only spends £1k’ on each of her three kids at Christmas and ‘never spoils’ them.

And we told you about the mum who dumped her fiance on Boxing Day and ended her seven-year romance for man she met at Christmas party.
