A HUGE blaze broke out this morning at Chester Zoo as firefighters spent hours tackling the fire and zoo staff led dozens of rare animals to safety.
Dramatic footage showed billowing black smoke and flames ripping through the roof of an enclosure after the blaze erupted at UK’s most-visited zoo late this morning.
The entire zoo, home to 21,000 animals, had to be closed as firefighters raced to the scene shortly after midday, bringing the fire under control at 2pm.
One person had to be treated for smoke inhalation but there were no other reports of injuries.
The affected enclosure houses Sumatran orangutans, Sulawesi macaques and the Sunda gharial crocodile as well as a number of rare birds.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “The zoo has been evacuated and all animals are accounted for. There are no reports of any injuries at this time.

“Drivers are advised to avoid the area. There are currently 15 fire appliances in attendance at the scene.”
The major fire sparked serious fears over the safety of animals in the Monsoon Forest habitat, home to rare creatures including Sumatran orangutans, Sulawesi macaques and the Sunda gharial crocodile.
Emma Flanagan, from Bristol, was visiting the zoo today with her dad, partner and one-year-old son.
Emma, 29, told the Manchester Evening News: “We saw the fire as we arrived, we thought it may be the zoo but we went into the car park anyway.
“One of the members of staff said it was one of the islands where the fire was.
“The building which was on fire looked like it was made from some sort of highly flammable material because it was just burning away.
“He said around 40 animals had been evacuated, people were still in there but they were getting told to leave.”
As the drama unfolded David Alan Wearing tweeted: “Fire at Chester Zoo – hope humans and animals evacuated safely – fire crews arriving on their scene.”
While another visitor added: “Such a shame, huge fire at Chester Zoo. Being evacuated :(.
What is Islands at Chester Zoo?
- Chester Zoo opened its Islands project in July 2015, expanding the zoo by 15 acres.
- Islands showcases areas where the zoo is involved in conservation programmes, including Sumatra, the Phillipines and Indonesia.
- Visitors can walk between the various islands via bridges and even view the animals on a boat trip.
- Monsoon Forest, where the fire broke out, houses a range of diverse species.
- These include Sulawesi macaques, Sunda gharial crocodile, Sumatran orangutans and a breeding pair of Javan silvery gibbons.
Two rapid response vehicles and one ambulance arrived on the scene as a precaution, but only the one visitor required treatment, while firefighters remained at the scene early this afternoon.
