A CANADIAN businessman who introduced Kim Jong-un to Dennis Rodman has gone missing in China.
Michael Spavor disappeared on Thursday morning hours after Canada’s Foreign Ministry was told he was being questioned by Chinese authorities.
He was scheduled to travel to the South Korean capital on Monday but never arrived.
It comes just one day after Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig was detained in China.
Critics believe the country is making tit-for-tat arrests after Canadian authorities arrested a top executive of the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei in Vancouver, at the request of the US.
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland confirmed they haven’t been able to contact Spavor.
She added: “We are working very hard to ascertain his whereabouts and we have also raised this case with the Chinese authorities.
“We are in touch with his family.”
The businessman is based in the northern Chinese city of Dandong and runs cultural exchanges with North Korea.
He is one of only a handful of people to be regularly invited into North Korea regularly, and even says he is friendly with tubby despot Kim.
Spavor has even had front row seats to Korea’s infamous military parades, seeing missiles and tanks pass through the streets of Pyongyang.
He lived in North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, for six months in 2005, and is so fluent in the local language that he has fooled people over the phone.
He is director of the Paektu Cultural Exchange, a company that introduces tourists and athletes to North Korea.
Spavor arranged a visit from NBA player Dennis Rodman who met Kim Jong-Un in 2017.
“We are aware that a Canadian citizen, Mr Michael Spavor, is presently missing in China,” the government said.
“As the Foreign Minister said today, we are aware of a Canadian citizen who was in contact with us from China.
