THE BBC has turned its Christmas Agatha Christie thriller, The ABC Murders, into a Brexit-bashing drama.
The new drama hints a comparison to the UK’s current political climate[/caption]
And the creators of the three-parter, which starts on BBC1 on Boxing Day, made no apologies for comparing Brexit with their adaptation of the Christie novel.
Writer Sarah Phelps said: “In the 1930s things were very much like they are now. In 1933 the British Union of Fascists started to gain real traction. The language of it is exactly the language of Brexit and Trump.
“The things we think we’ve left behind historically, are just there – savage belches of filth – just waiting to erupt into our consciousness again.
“Having been this celebrated Belgian detective, suddenly he’s somebody ‘from another country’ – it’s not a good thing to be. You are in danger all the time.”
The three-parter, that begins on Boxing Day, stars Harry Potter legend Rupert Grint[/caption]
Brazilian-born director Alex Gabassi confirmed that was why they’d decided to dilute Poirot’s Belgian tones.

He said: “If you’re somehow being threatened, you try to blend in.The language was informed by that – lets not go for the stereotypical Belgian/French accent.”
And Sarah, whose previous controversial Christie adaptations for the BBC have included sex, drugs and swearing, said ditching the detectives eyecatching moustache was part of creating her “stripped back” Poirot.
She added: “It really suited the time, really suited the story and suited Hercule the way I’d written him.”
