LITTLE Britain star Matt Lucas jumped to Dame Barbara Windsor’s aid last night, as she stepped out to watch the Snow White pantomime at the London Palladium.

The former Eastenders star was spotted smiling and laughing outside the theatre with Matt, 44, and her partner, Scott Mitchell, 55, during the rare public appearance before getting a hand up the stairs and into the venue.

Wrapping up warm in the cold weather, the actress, 81, opted for a pair of black trousers, grey overcoat with detailing, a black scarf and flat shoes for the occasion.

Scott and Matt both wore for navy suits, with black shoes.

However, last night wasn’t the first time that the actress has made a public appearance in recent months, as she was pictured grinning from ear-to-ear leavinge Evgeny Lebedev Christmas Party in London last week.

The former on-screen landlady was also given a standing ovation when she attended the Theatre Royal Drury lane last month, to see pal Bonnie Langford perform in 42nd Street The Musical.

During the interval she crept into the Royal Box with former fellow EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt, 50, who plays Ian Beale on the soap, his wife Beverley and Bab’s husband Scott.

The crowd gave Barbara a standing ovation, which Woodyatt described as “so moving”.

After the show, she was given a private tour of the theatre where she tap-danced on the stage.

Scott told the Mirror: “It was a wonderful day. The public are the warmest people in the world to Barbara.

“It gives her such pleasure chatting to everyone and seeing them all and she never expects that reaction. Then she did an impromptu dance routine on the stage after the show.

“It’s like two different people once she enters a theatre. The old Babs emerges for a while. It’s wonderful to see those moments.”

Carry on films legend Barbara, or Babs as she is more affectionately known, was diagnosed with the disease in 2014 but it was not announced until 2018.

During an exclusive interview with The Sun in May, her devoted husband Scott decided to go public with the news.

“I didn’t want someone else to dictate how or when the diagnosis came out, so that’s why I’m speaking about it now,” he explained.

He continued: “I’m doing this because I want us to be able to go out and, if something isn’t quite right, it will be OK because people will now know that she has Alzheimer’s and will accept it for what it is.

“She often asks me, ‘Do the public know that I’m not well?’ And she asked me again this morning.

“I said they didn’t yet, but we were going to have to let them know because so many people are talking now. But if she forgets that she gave me her blessing, well, I’ll just have to deal with that,” he says matter-of-factly.

It was also revealed in August that she had to have a heart operation after she collapsed at her home.

However, shortly after a friend of Barbara’s, Paul O’Grady, confirmed that she was doing well.

Speaking to The Mirror, he said: “She is doing really well, and he is remarkable, Scott. Since she has had the pacemaker, I’ve been to see her.

“The love they have for each other, it breaks your heart. She knows who I am. She’s fine.”
