Armed police have shot a man during an early morning pre-planned operation in Wimbledon, south West London.

Witnesses described seeing a man who was wearing red 'pointing a pistol' before hearing 'a massive bang' at around 8.10am this morning.

One shocked local resident said she saw a man 'charging past with a gun' and that when police chased after him she decided to stay inside.

She said: 'I heard a massive bang, then people were saying he was shot and taken to hospital.'

Another witness, who did not want to be named, told GetWestLondon that they heard a loud 'bang' at around 8.10am and saw a man, who they 'weren't sure was undercover police or not' wearing red and running with a 'pistol.'

They added that almost immediately after two undercover cars 'put on their sirens and pulled a U turn back up Haydons Road.'

He claimed all the people involved in the apparent chase then went up North Road.

The local resident added that he later saw one of the 'undercover officers' who was  'holding the large gun' coming back down the road to 'collect his police cap that he was not wearing.'

A woman who works inside the cordon on Haydons Road said she heard gunshots outside just after getting to work.

She said: 'We were told to stay inside at about 8.15 this morning.

'A lot of police turned up, there were vans everywhere and a lot of unmarked cars, with sirens blaring outside.

'I believe somebody was shot, it was a very distinctive sound - and then a team of armed police came running by the window.'

The concerned mother of a young girl who reportedly witnessed the incident said her daughter heard three gun shots.

The man, whose age is not yet known, was shot in Lacock Close, Wimbledon, and a second man has been arrested for conspiracy to rob.

The operation was being conducted by officers from the Met's anti-robbery Flying Squad and they were assisted by firearms colleagues.

The man has been taken by London Ambulance Service to a London hospital and his condition is not known.

One resident told the local news website: 'Most of the action appeared to be down Lacock Close. Lots of undercover police cars and lots of police with guns around.

'Someone was put into an ambulance with a large bandage wrapped around their arm. Heard police radioing for ambulance, saying that someone had been shot.'

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards have been informed, police said.

A number of roads in the area, including Haydons Road, have been closed and a forensic scene is in place.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an independent investigation.
