If there’s one video game system from my childhood that I miss with a longing that hurts, it’s my Game Boy. I had the OG brick and I took that sumbitch with me everywhere. And for a good reason.
It was a monster. It could do things other handhelds could only dream of, and lasted forever. Sure, the screen was always grey and dark, but many a car trip was survived because of Pokemon Red. Super Mario Land 2, and Street Fighter II.
OG Game Boy, I miss you.

It can survive an explosion
Sure, the Game Boy was pretty tough; you could drop it, throw it at your brother and it’d still work. This thing was handy, no matter the circumstances. Which was why many soldiers brought them along to the Gulf War to alleviate the boredom.
One soldier left his Game Boy behind when his barracks got bombed. Everything was destroyed, except for this Game Boy. The front is a little melted, but it still works. It’s currently on display at the Nintendo store in NYC, playing a Tetris demo.

It almost was a PDA
Today, we all have phones that do it all for us, but in 1990, your Game Boy was almost the first one to do it.
A company called Fabtek planned the Work Boy peripheral that was supposed to turn the handheld device into your everything. There was a keyboard, along with software for a clock, day planner, currency converter and spreadsheets. Thankfully, it never went anywhere.

It was the first selfie taker with filters
This is one of the most notorious accessories for the Game Boy, but it was also really ahead of its time. In 1999 it actually held the world record for the world’s smallest digital camera, and really, was the first way that kids were taking selfies and adding accessories and effects to it.
So essentially, Snapchat is all Nintendo’s fault.

It worked with a Sewing Machine
For some reason, there was always a huge focus on making the Game Boy do things other than gaming, so I guess this makes sense. The Singer sewing company got in on the action, releasing the Izek in 2000 as a kid’s first sewing machine.
The machine came with a Game Boy color and cable that allowed you to control the machine with the handheld. There were over 80 patterns and you could make the machine embroider letters and messages.
Why the fuck didn’t this catch on? I could have had a sick Super Mario jean jacket with custom messages in 2000.

You could play your favourite games on Super Nintendo
Even though the point of the Game Boy was its portability, people wanted to also play those games at home. So, in 1994, Nintendo released this peripheral. But it wasn’t just an ordinary adapter.
It actually added extra colour, better sound and an easier multiplayer to elevate your Tetris and Metroid experience.
The multi-player was awesomely complicated
While the console was conceived as something for solo gamers, the Game Boy was also built with multiplayer in mind. When it was first released there was a Link Cable for some head to head Tetris. Then, they released an adaptor that let people hook up 4 Game Boys at once to play F-! Race or Yoshi’s Cookie.
But if you played your cards right, and had the correct amount of adapters and cables, you could set up a 16 player game with FPS Faceball 2000. Insane.

The Game Boy had the only two Mario games without Bowser
While on the console versions, you seldom had Mario without Bowser, both Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, he was either rescuing Princess Daisy (not Peach) or his 6 coins, from Tatanga or Wario.

You could play FM Radio
If you got tired of listening to the game’s soundtrack, you could plug in this Boom Box Boy. It’d connect to a local radio station and you could listen through the speaker or headphone.
On the downside, you couldn’t pick the station (it just tuned into the strongest signal) and it was always too loud.

It had an insane battery life
When it comes to portable devices, battery life is important. With 4 AA batteries, this bad boy could get you up to 30 hours of playtime.
That’s because the hardware didn’t need a lot of power, and the 4 different shades of grey without a backlight didn’t really requires much.

It can be used as a musical instrument
Personally, I’ve never heard of heard of Chiptune, but it’s apparently a relatively new musical genre. It’s inspired by the soundtracks of the 8 and 16-bit eras and relies on that signature electronic pixelated sound. But, if you want it to be accurate, you need to use the tech of that era.
So, some super-smart modders have found ways to use Game Boys and cartridges called the Little Sound DJ or Nanoloop to make music from the device.

The Game Boy is partially behind the invention of Pokemon
When Pokemon hit the Game Boy in 1998, it changed gaming, and it seems like it was specifically invented just for the device. Well, it kinda was. According to the designer of the franchise, he loved how the Game Boy Link Cable connected two people together and he could imagine monsters running between them.
So between that idea, and his passion for bug collecting, he created the first two games and made sure that the Link Cable was a huge part, so you could catch them all.

It out-sold its competition, despite having worse graphics
Let’s face it, you didn’t own a Game Boy for the graphics. If that was your jam, the Atari Lynx and the Sega Game Gear would service you better. And yet, Nintendo outsold them.
The reason though, makes sense. For starters, the Game Boy was cheaper ($89.99 vs. $179.99 for Atari). The other important reason was battery life; the simple graphics meant you could play longer, and the game selection was unbeatable.

It could help you find that fish
When it came to peripherals, some were incredibly genius, while others made no sense. This is one of the ones that shouldn’t exist. Made by Bandai in 1998, this Pocket Sonar turned your Game Boy into a radar.
The foam buoy worked for depths up to 65 feet, and there were some games to keep you occupied, but it’s primary role was to find those fish.

It could control your Television
The Game Boy adaptation for Mission: Impossible was incredibly innovative. The game itself wasn’t all that good, but the bonus features actually turned your Game Boy into a cool gadget.
Within those features, you could send texts to other players, save addresses and calculate numbers. You could also program your handheld to your TV as a remote. You just needed a specific model of the Game Boy Colour.

It could sense your motion
While it’s everywhere on mobile games and phones today, Nintendo was the first to have a built-in-accelerometer. Debuting in Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble, you’d need to tilt and move your Game Boy to make Kirby move.
Man, I miss this screen.
