Shoppers have been left baffled after spotting a discount of just 1p on Quality Street chocolates at Aldi.  

The supermarket, famous for its bargains, slashed the price of the chocolate selection from £4 to £3.99 ahead of Christmas.

The deal was on offer at a branch in Louth, Lincolnshire, but has been photographed at stores across the country.

The same deal was also spotted on Celebrations chocolates, a Victoria Biscuit Selection and a Sweet Shop Favourites tub.

Twitter user Richardesty was walking through the supermarket on Friday when he noticed a red 'lower price' sign next to a tower of the chocolate boxes. 

He tweeted: 'A not to be missed bargain at Aldi in Louth this afternoon!

'And you wouldn't believe how many are buying them.'

Another shopper, Sarah, wrote on Twitter: 'I saw the same 'offer' in Lincoln. I had to do a double take!'

A mother, 42, said she noticed the discount two weeks ago and was shocked the supermarket still had it on display.

She said: 'It could be a bit of a cheek, a kind of joke to see who falls for it.'

Baffled shoppers took to Twitter to share photographs of the signs - but Aldi responded 'a penny saved is a penny earned!'

Another Twitter user spotted the red 'lower price' sign on the Quality Street boxes Sunderland. 

He said: 'Save a fortune at Aldi on tubs of Quality Street!'

Adam Richardson tweeted a picture of the saving on Celebrations chocolates.

He said: 'Is this for real!? You're actually crossing out £4 and advertising £3.99?'

Aldi responded: 'Hi Adam, we're always looking to save you money and offer the best prices compared to other supermarkets.

'As they say, a penny saved is a penny earned!'
