AN air ambulance on a 999 call had to take emergency action to avoid a Spitfire.

The WW2 fighter had just exited a loop when it headed towards the helicopter at about 220mph.

The chopper’s co-pilot steered to the right while the Spitfire did an apparent barrel roll and came even closer, the report said.

An anti-collision warning system on the helicopter sounded and the pilot took control and did “a steep turn to the left”.

Radar records showed the two aircraft which were both flying at 1,100ft missed each other by just 400 yards on June 5 around seven miles east of Sevenoaks, Kent.

The air ambulance carried on to help an accident victim in Herne Bay.

The Airprox Board concluded the safety of both aircraft “had been compromised to the extent that a definite risk of collision had existed”.

It rated it as the second highest Category B incident where safety was not assured.

Investigators queried whether the chopper should have taken evasive action earlier.

But the report suggested ultimately the Spitfire should have given way. The Spitfire pilot told investigators he could not recall the incident.
