New photo 10 ways you can save money at Nando’s – including how to get a FREE meal in January

A BARGAIN hunter has revealed some clucking good ways you can save money at Nando’s – including how to bag a free meal in January.

Jordon Cox, aka the Coupon Kid, has shared his “peri” best tips for slashing your bill when you next visit the popular Portuguese-inspired chain – and we’ve also added a few of our own money-saving secrets too.

Nando’s isn’t known for being pricey, and you can usually leave full and spend less than £15 a head.

But it’s always good to shave off a few extra pounds off your bill when you can, especially this close to Christmas.

Discounts at Nando’s are quite rare, so you will have to be a bit creative if you want to save a few quid, according to 21-year-old Jordon, of Essex, who writes for MoneySavingExpert.com.

His top tips include using a loyalty card hack to score a free meal worth up to £7.45 next month, menu-ordering hacks that will save a few pounds, and secret menu items that won’t cost you extra.

1. Score a free meal in January

If you visit a branch of the chain and swipe the restaurant’s Nando’s Card by Sunday, you will be given a free meal worth up to £7.45 to redeem in January.

First, you will need to get a Nando’s Card loyalty card if you don’t have one already, which you can pick up at any branch.

You will need to register it online and opt in to emails – otherwise you won’t be able to take advantage of the deal.

Then all you need to do is spend at least £7 at Nando’s and swipe your card when you pay.

You will receive a free reward of either a burger, wrap, pitta, or half chicken worth between £6.45 and £7.45 which you can redeem between January 7 and January 25.

Obviously, if you’re not planning on dining out this week, then it’s probably not worth claiming this freebie as you’ll just spend money unnecessarily.

But if you are planning to eat out with friends anyway, then you could suggest Nando’s so that you can take advantage of the deal.

2. Make your own Double Chicken Burger for 85p less

Jordon reveals that you can get more meat in your meal if you make your own Nando’s Double Chicken Burger – and pay 85p less.

A £9.25 Double Chicken Burger contains a smaller piece of chicken than the chain’s boneless Butterfly Chicken as it has to fit in the bun.

But Jordon reveals that if you order a £7.50 Butterly Chicken and a 90p Portuguese bread roll, you can make your own DIY burger for £8.40 and get more meat.

You won’t get the lettuce and tomato that comes with the burger – but it could be a good trick for meat-heads who just want to cram as much chicken into their mouths as possible.

3. 20 per cent off for emergency services and armed forces

It’s not a discount that many people know about, but you can get 20 per cent off your food and drink bill if you are in the emergency services or armed forces.

You just need to show a valid photo ID card that shows you work for the emergency services, the NHS or the armed forces.

The maximum you will be able to save is £4 but the discount will apply to the whole table – so friends and family will be able to benefit too.

You can only use the discount once per day, if you were tempted to visit more than once on the same day to take advantage.

4. Order a platter and save £4.85

This deal only really works if you and your dining buddy want the same thing.

But if you are both craving a half chicken and a side, then it’s worth ordering a Meal Platter.

Two separate orders of a half chicken, regular side and bottomless drink costs £25.30.

But the Meal Platter – which comes with a whole chicken, two regular sides and two bottomless drinks – costs £4.85 less at £20.45.

5. How to get more chips and save 35p

If two of you want to order a regular side of chips, then you might want to order a large fries instead.

Two portions of regular fries costs £5 (£2.50 each), while a large portion to share costs £4.65.

When Jordon tried out this trick, he got 82 chips in the large portion compared to 68 when he combined two regular portions.

6. Make DIY Perinaise and save 50p

A portion of PERInaise will cost you an extra 50p.

But you can get around this charge by making your own.

Simply ask for a portion of mayonnaise and then stir in your Peri-Peri sauce of choice from the condiments bar.

It won’t be exactly the same as Nando’s PERInaise but it’s a good free substitute.

7. Make a Fantoke for no extra charge

The “Fantoke” was made famous by England footballer Dele Alli, who tweeted that he always mixes Coca Cola with Fanta at the soft drinks station when he visits a Nando’s.

Now his fans have been doing the same ever since, and tagging the Tottenham Hotspur star in photos of their creation.

It doesn’t cost any extra to make the unusual drink – just order a bottomless soft drink for £2.70 and mix it yourself at the drinks station.

8. Don’t order Coca-Cola to avoid the 20p sugar tax

The sugar tax only applies to Coca-Cola at Nando’s which will cost you 20p more.

But you can dodge the tax if you opt for another drink, such as Coke Zero, Sprite or Fanta.

9. Make your own avocado breakfast

The only Nando’s that serves breakfast is the restaurant at London Gatwick’s South Terminal.

But you can make your own avocado on toast for £3.60 at any branch.

Simply order a side of regular garlic bread for £2.45 and then ask for half an avocado for £1.15, which is an optional extra for salads.

Then combine the two yourself to make avocado toast.

10. Win £250 worth of Nando’s vouchers

There’s no guarantee with this one, but there’s currently a competition on to win £250 worth of Nando’s vouchers.

Savethestudent.org is giving away the vouchers and it’s free to enter the contest.

Last month, we revealed the cleverest ways to knock a few pounds off your meal at McDonald’s too.

One bargain hunter has also come up with a way of buying 20 McChicken Nuggets and two large fries for just 77p.

It comes after the news that McDonald’s charges up to 15 per cent more for a meal if you buy it from a service station or out-of-town branch.
