TWO-year-old James Bulger was tortured and killed by schoolboys in a crime that shocked Britain.
The toddler was abducted from the Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Merseyside, on February 12, 1993 by Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. Here’s who their parents are and how they reacted…
What happened to James Bulger?
Robert Thompson and Jon Venables were only 10 years old when they became the country’s youngest murderers in 250 years.
Little James was led away by the depraved duo while his mother was in a butcher’s shop at the busy shopping centre.
A picture taken from CCTV footage shows the tot being taken by the hand in what would become one of the defining images of the shocking case.
The killers walked James for two and half miles and were spotted by 38 people – some of whom challenged the pair.
Venables and Thompson told passers-by that the distressed toddler was their younger brother or that he was lost and they were taking him to a local police station.
The pair took James to a railway line and tortured, beat and sexually assaulted him.
They poured modelling paint into his eyes, stoned him and clubbed him with bricks, before leaving him on the railway line to be hit by a train.
After killing the tot Robert and Jon left his body near the tracks where it was discovered two days later.
Who are the parents of Jon Venables, and what did they say about the killing?
Throughout the police interview, Jon was accompanied by his crestfallen parents Susan and Neil.
Jon only revealed his part in the tot’s murder after they reassured him they’d still love him if he confessed.
Harrowing interview transcripts revealed how Susan wept with anger when Jon admitted being in the shopping centre the day Bulger was arrested.
Just days later he would break down and manically attack his distraught father as detectives asked about damage to James’s genitals.
Susan cried silently in the interview room as Jon was charged with the toddler’s murder, and was eventually forced to leave Liverpool with a new identity after an avalanche of death threats.
She said: “He did like to be liked, and loved to have friends, and he has got involved with the wrong person.
“What he’s done is wrong so he needs to be punished. What upsets me is I’ve no way of bringing him up for the rest of his young years so he’s going to lose all his childhood.”
Neil added: ‘I feel for that family. I feel so sorry for them. I have lost my son as well. We will never be able to do the fun things any more… football, snooker, things like that.”
Who are Robert Thompson’s parents?
After the trial, Robert Thompson’s mum Ann told how she was “effectively in hiding, unable to live anything like a normal life because of the constant and real fear of revenge attacks”.
During the trial she said: “Yes, he did tell some lies, but he also told the truth about one thing from beginning to end – he did not kill that baby. I honestly do believe him.
“They always blame the parents. It’s a very difficult situation, when you are getting no support as a family, you’re alone and you face the world alone, the same as I’m doing now.”

What has happened to Jon Venables now?
The killer has admitted having a sick paedophile manual which told him how to “have sex with little girls”.
He also pleaded guilty to having more than 1,000 indecent images of children for the second time – these pictures included kids aged 6-13.
Venables was banned from any internet access after his last release in 2013, but the judge was told he started searching for child abuse images last July.
Cops found the vile collection on a laptop hidden behind the headboard of his bed.
He was released in 2013 after he was deemed to no longer be a risk to children, but told police in 2017 he “needed help to understand why he did this and ensure he didn’t do it again”.
Venables has now been caged for 40 months.
