A TOWN is so overrun with coffee shops that councillors decided to leave a store empty rather than let another one open.

The High Street in Christchurch, Dorset, has 14 coffee shops on a 500 metre stretch — an average of one every 35 metres.

So chain Coffee#1’s bid to open No15 in an ex-shoe shop that has been empty for a year triggered angry objections from locals — and councillors refused permission.

Mike Ismail, owner of Baggies Cafe, said the situation was out of control.

He added: “There are 28 food outlets just in the core part of High Street and 14 of those are cafes or coffee shops.

“To have that many in a town centre of this size is a crazy situation.

“When I first started in 2012 business was booming but custom has reduced hugely because there are too many of us.”

Councillor Peter Hall said allowing yet another coffee shop may well have caused one of the existing outlets to go under.

He added: “The applicants said they were going to employ eight people but it could have meant eight jobs were lost elsewhere.”
