BRITAIN is bracing itself for a cold snap which could see snow and freezing Arctic temperatures, forecasters have warned.

As the country prepares for winter weather experts say “heavy snow and very cold wind” are expected to bring  some early winter weather.

Piers Corbyn, forecaster for WeatherAction, told The Mirror: “An active low-pressure system will move in from the northwest next week signalling a change to much colder conditions.

“We are expecting this to bring some early winter weather with heavy snow and very cold winds in the north and a risk of wintry showers even across southern Britain.”

Forecasters say the freezing conditions could stay throughout December and into 2019.

The Met office warn: “With more generally colder temperatures, there will be an increased chance of snow, particularly for northern hills, during spells of more unsettled weather.”

Forecasters say today will be mainly dry and sunny with a bright morning for most.

It follows gale-force winds and heavy rain which brought flooding to part of the country.

A yellow warning had been issued for parts of Wales after some homes were reportedly left in under up to 10 foot of water in Pembrokeshire.

The Met office say today “will see showers die out over Wales, northern and western England, leaving a mainly dry, bright and sunny afternoon”.

They said: “It will still be breezy at times, but should stay relatively mild for all.”

The Met office added: “A few showers will linger in the morning, mainly across northern England and Scotland. These will become more isolated through the day, leaving mainly dry conditions and sunny spells into the afternoon.

“Perhaps some rain reaching Northern Ireland later.”

But by this evening heavy rain and strong winds will arrive in Northern Ireland and Scotland by early evening.

The downpour will later move onto northern England and parts of Wales.

The weekend will be mostly dry, with some large amounts of cloud.

The northern and north-eastern parts of the British Isles will most likely have the brightest conditions, but sun should develop across the southeast by Sunday.
