Shocking footage has been captured of the inhumane conditions dogs were kept in on a farm used to breed puppies to fund dog-fighting ventures.

RSPCA Queensland investigator Dan Young spent 10 years tracking Haris Ljuhar, 41, who sold trendy dogs, such as French bulldogs, online through Facebook and Gumtree for up to $10,000 each.

In January 2017 the RSPCA was called to a property in the Goondiwindi region in outback southern Queensland where they found almost 100 dogs and cats being kept in disgusting conditions in rooms with faeces and festering water.

'The amount of animals he had, and the type of animals he had, he had the opportunity to bring in significant money, ridiculous amounts of money,' Mr Young told The Courier Mail.

'The property smelt like death. The dogs couldn't get out, food would be thrown in. If you wanted to get in, you had to climb over the top,' he said.

American bulldogs, Australian bulldogs and French bulldogs worth thousands were kept with Pitbulls and other dogs in the inhumane conditions.

Some of the dead animals had been used as feed for the remaining dogs with rotting corpses littered throughout the property.

He was charged with 215 animal cruelty and neglect charges – the highest number ever placed on an individual in Queensland.

The RSPCA has issued new warnings to buyers to be vigilant when purchasing a puppy and to make sure they buy from reputable sellers.

Changes to the law last year required anyone who bred a litter of puppies to register as a breeder and so far more than 18,000 breeders had registered.

Also new laws were brought in by the Queensland Government last year outlining minimum welfare conditions those selling puppies must abide by. 

In 2012 Ljuhar admitted to Sports Dog Journal, a dog fighting magazine published in the US, that he ran a dog-fighting operation.

'The operation is on approximately 3000 hectares that we own and is funded by the breeding and sale of French bulldogs and mastiff breeds,' he told the magazine.

The RSPCA wanted to ban Ljuhar from ever owning another animal but he died from illness before he could be brought to justice.

'It was frustrating, personally and professionally,' Mr Young said.
