Low pressure from the west will bring a cold snap to our shores and chill the north east

Meteorologists say a “battleground scenario” will play out over the next few weeks with snowfall coming and going until Christmas day.

The predictions give hope to Brits dreaming of a White Christmas this year.

Heavy snow dumps froze the northern parts of the UK this week with inches covering the hills of the Peak District in Derbyshire.

But now experts predict an unusually cold winter is brewing as the rain clouds leave.

Eleanor Bell, principal meteorologist for the Weather Company, told The Sun Online: “We expect this winter to be different to the last seven milder winters we have had, with an increased risk for colder intrusions across the northern half of Europe and below normal temperatures through January and February.

“A cold start to next week is expected with temperatures slightly below normal for the time of year in an east/north-easterly breeze.

“It will turn more unsettled from the west on Tuesday after a frosty start.

“Low pressure will continue to dominate the weather for the remainder of the week with a windier and wetter outlook and temperatures lifting into double figures again (10/11C), slightly above normal for the time of year.”

Met office maps show drier conditions for the north west
Heavy rain will continue to drench the south west until Saturday

John Hammond, chief meteorologist for Weathertrending, told said snow will accompany the cold snap.

He told The Sun Online: “The weather next week remains on a ‘knife-edge’.

“Mild southwesterlies will try to remove cold northeasterlies. Where the two collide, something’s got to give.

“It looks likely that as rain spreads across the UK from midweek, we could well see a period of snow. This is most likely across the hills of northern and eastern Britain, but there may be some to lower levels for a time.

“Milder weather will reach many southern areas by the end of the week, but further north it’s much less certain.

“We do think that next week’s ‘battleground’ scenario could recur several times in the weeks ahead, giving the potential for further snowfalls in the run-up to Christmas.”
