CROATIA have won the last ever edition of the Davis Cup in its current form as Marin Cilic defeated Lucas Pouille to secure a 3-1 win.
Cilic was imperious throughout the weekend and got the job done in straight sets, beating his opponent 7-6, 6-3, 6-3.
That victory meant that Cilic, and fellow singles star Borna Coric won all their rubbers without dropping a single set or service game.
Up first on Friday, Coric easily defeated Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 before Cilic defeated Tsonga 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
But the French fought back in the doubles with Nicolas Mahut and Pierre Hugues-Herbert beating Mate Pavic and Ivan Dodig in four sets, leaving the visitors with work to do.
After wrapping up a second Davis Cup triumph for Croatia, Cilic was in buoyant mood and delighted in the performance of himself and Coric.
He said: “It’s not everyday that we become world champions. It’s an incredible moment and gonna be big our country.
“We didn’t drop a single service game in three singles matches. Perfect weekend”.
The victory represented redemption for Cilic, who suffered an agonising five-set defeat to Juan Martin Del Potro on the final day of the 2016 final, allowing Argentina to secure a 3-2 comeback win in Zagreb.

And Croatia captain Zeljko Krajan admitted: “2016 was in my mind for a long time.”
The Croats will now go down in history as the last ever winners of the competition, with a £2.3bn shorter version organised by Barcelona star Gerard Pique replacing it next year.
It is believed that next year’s tournament will be played under a sponsor’s name and take on a World Cup-style format.
