JOHN Cleese has been slammed after sharing a joke about the California wildfires that have killed at least 56 people.
The comedian tweeted the dark humour gag made by survivors after hearing it in a restaurant in Sacremento, California.
The Monty Python star, 79, wrote: “Invited tonight to a Sacramento restaurant called Lucca, by the owner Erin.
“She said that last night several people came in to eat who were from Paradise, the place that just burned to the ground.
“She told me that they wanted everything they ordered flambeed. Magnificent…”
But the tweet has divided opinion with some Twitter users branding it distasteful “while the fire is still burning” and “too soon”.
One person wrote: “As funny as the dozens of people that burned to death.”
Another added: “I credit myself with a good sense of humour but whats funny about joking about people dying horrifically and also the fact that there are many people still missing……i dont get it, whats funny about that exactly!??”
But Fawlty Towers star Cleese defended his post, writing: “But it was their joke, and they were the ones who had suffered.
“That’s what makes it magnificent.”
And @CinFlynn replied: “Humor gets us through so much heartache, doesn’t it?”
At least 56 have been confirmed to have died and a further 200 are missing as fires ravage huge tracts in the north and the celebrity studded Malibu area near Los Angeles.
