AN English fizz has beaten rivals from France, Spain and Italy in a blind taste test for the best Christmas bubbly.

Denbies Chalk Valley sparkling wine got the highest mark of 77 per cent from a panel of experts.

If youre after a bottle of award-winning fizz, look no further than Dorking

The £16 bottle, made in Dorking, Surrey, and sold exclusively in Morrisons, was praised for its “brisk fizz and tropical fruity flavour”.

It topped a list of champagne alternatives, costing between £7.50 and £20 and nominated by supermarkets for testing by consumer group Which?.

None of the top-three rated wines was a prosecco. Second was a French sparkling wine, the £11 Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Cremant.

It was praised by the judges as “simple and refreshing”, with “attractive herbal and pear notes”.

Third spot went to Tesco Finest Franciacorta, a £15 Italian sparkling wine which has been dubbed “this year’s fashionable fizz”.

The highest-ranked prosecco, the Asda £8 Extra Special Prosecco Asolo, was fourth, pipping offerings from Lidl, Aldi and the Co-op.

Experts sampled 240 glasses of wine. Which? Magazine editor Harry Rose said: “The quality and choice on offer this year is good news for lovers of sparkling wine.”
