JOE ROOT is waiting to discover which big cricket name will be his new boss.
Applications to replace Andrew Strauss as director of England cricket close on Friday.
And Root, whose dream is to elevate the Test team from No 3 to No 1 in the world, wants the new supremo to continue Strauss’ work.
Root said: “Andrew has done a fantastic job to take us to where we are.
“To get the one-day side to the top of the world in his reign as director is a magnificent achievement. You could see the structure change completely, with white-ball cricket being a real focus.
“On a personal front, as captain, some of the work he’s done off the field — which a lot of people don’t see — has really helped and benefited me.
“It’s no coincidence we’re hitting an upward curve now with all the hard work that he put in a lot earlier down the line.”
Strauss is standing down to spend more time with his wife Ruth, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, and their family.
Former head coach Andy Flower has taken the job on an interim basis. Strauss and ECB chief executive Tom Harrison will make the appointment and a head-hunting company has been engaged to try to make sure nobody slips through the net.
The ECB say the new person — expected to be on around £350,000-a-year — will be in place ahead of England’s tour of West Indies in mid-January.

The job specification states that “international and/or first-class county playing experience” is desirable, so ex-skippers such as Mike Atherton, Alec Stewart, Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan have been linked.
Senior county figures including Ashley Giles (Warwickshire), Angus Fraser (Middlesex), Mick Newell (Notts) and Martyn Moxon (Yorkshire) have been discussed.
And current ECB employees such as Flower, Clare Connor, Nathan Leamon, Ed Smith and Mo Bobat are also under consideration.
England are unlikely to look to another sport after former rugby player Pat Howard turned out to be a poor appointment
in the same role for Australia.
Most potential candidates approached by SunSport have declined to say whether they are interested or if they have applied.
But that is hardly surprising — one of the qualities required is… discretion.
