THE deadliest wildfire in California’s modern history is still raging out of control as the fires have now claimed 50 lives.
More than 200,000 acres have been burned since the fires started last Thursday.
Smoke from the wildfires is now being carried across the United States and has now reached Chicago.
Firefighters are battling the fire in Butte County, north of Sacramento and authorities fear more bodies will be found as searchers scour the burnt out rumble of what remains of the town of Paradise, where around 27,000 people lived.
Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea told reporters: “There’s certainly the unfortunate possibility that even after we search an area, once we get people back in there, it’s possible that human remains can be found.”
Officials have requested 100 National Guard troops join in the search to locate and recover any human remains.
In southern California, firefighters still are battling the Woolsey Fire, which so far has left two people dead in Malibu.
As the number of people falling victim to the fires hits 50 the first people to have died because of the blazes have been named.
They have also been tackling a new fire in San Bernardino County which started on Tuesday about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.
So far it is thought to have burned around 147 acres although no evacuations have been ordered.
Ernest Foss, 63, a musician who had survived cancer twice.
He moved to the town of Paradise from San Francisco eight years ago.
A friend, David Maitland, described him has a “pure soul”.
He told USA Today: He was a good person to be around.
“Everyone who knew” him loved him. “There was no evil bone in his body. He was a pure soul.”
Jesus Fernandez, who lived in Concow, also fell victim to the fires.

A family statement given to the San Francisco Chronicle said: “(He) was the epitome of determination, respect, loyalty, and perseverance.
“A tireless provider, a dependable and loyal friend, a considerate neighbour, and loving father, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
The third person to have been named so far is Carl Wiley, 77, who worked for the tyre company Michelin.
