WALLY DOWNES is on his way back to Wimbledon – as manager of the League One side.
Downes, 57, has seen off competition from Kevin Nolan and Russell Slade to take over at the club where he founded football’s original crazy gang as a player in the 1980s.
The Dons had more than 90 applicants for the post after sacking Neil Ardley two weeks ago as they battled against relegation.
Downes played more than 200 games for Wimbledon and will be officially unveiled on a two-and-half-year deal as the new boss early next week.
But both parties have agreed that times have changed since the days of madcap pranks when the Crazy Gang was infamous throughout football.
He has been working in India alongside former Crystal Palace boss Steve Coppell at ATK.
Downes was also a successful defensive coach at West Ham and sold his idea of a long-term plan to revive Wimbledon as they prepare to move back to their spiritual home at Plough Lane in time for next season.

He flew back for talks on Monday and returned to India ahead of his final game with ATK – who have three clean sheets in their last three.
Downes has not managed in England since a short stint in charge of Brentford 14 years ago but went on to take several top-level coaching jobs.
He worked for Coppell when Reading were promoted to the Prem in 2006 with a Championship record of 106 points.
Alan Pardew – who has been leading the Don’s search for a new boss – took him to Southampton before Downes worked under Avram Grant and then Sam Allardyce at West Ham.
His last role in England was with Harry Redknapp’s QPR, before stints at Indian sides Jamshedpur and Kolkata-based ATK followed.
The former midfielder had to retire at 24 after suffering breaking his legs FOUR times.
