A needle has reportedly been found inside an apple in the latest spiked fruit to be discovered.

New South Wales Police are investigating claims that an apple was found with a sewing needle inside of it in North Sydney on Tuesday.

It comes after strawberries and bananas were both found to sabotaged with needles and sewing pins.

The claim was first reported by 7 News Sydney. 

A woman was peeling freshly bought apples for her daughters to enjoy when she made the horrifying discovery, firstly believing it to be the stem of the fruit. 

7 News reported it was a Pink Lady Apple from inside a pre packed container at the Woolworths in the The Ponds, a suburb of Sydney. 

The woman, named only as Carmello, told 7 News she was stunned.

'I just thought wow this can’t possibly be happening,' she said. 

'I’ve seen the news about the strawberries and I’ve been vigilant with cutting those up for the girls, but to see this in an apple, I actually thought these were safe.'

The latest scare comes after a number of strawberries and bananas were found to have foreign objects inside. 

Six brands of strawberry - Donnybrook Berries, Love Berry, Delightful Strawberries, Oasis, Berry Obsession and Berry Licious - have been recalled amid the contamination scare, with shoppers advised to cut up the fruit before eating it. 

The Australian federal government has launched an investigation to restore confidence after needles were reportedly found in strawberries in all six Australian states, although no injuries have yet been reported.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt ordered the national food safety watchdog to investigate Queensland's handling of the needle scare.

He directed Food Standards Australia New Zealand to investigate whether there are supply chain weaknesses that need to be fixed.

'The job is very, very clear. Protect the public and keep them safe,' Mr Hunt told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Meanwhile Queensland police confirmed they were investigating an incident where a metal object was found inside a banana, after needles were found in Queensland strawberries. 

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart confirmed police were actively investigating an incident, but did not give details about where the contaminated banana was found.
