DONALD Trump has said Boris Johnson would do a “great job” as Prime Minister if he wins the race to be the next Tory leader
The US president said he had spoken to the leadership frontrunner with just days left until the vote closes on Monday.
“I spoke to him yesterday. I think he’s going to do a great job. I think we’re going to have a great relationship,” Trump said at a White House event.
Referring to Theresa May, whom he has repeatedly criticised for her handling of leaving the EU, Trump said “the previous prime minister has done a very bad job with Brexit.”
“It’s a disaster, and it shouldn’t be that way. I think Boris will straighten it out,” the President said.
His comments come after he said in an interview with The Sun that the former Mayor of London would be an “excellent” choice for the next Tory leader.
“I think Boris would do a very good job,” said Mr Trump.
Mr Johnson and the US President appear to enjoy a close relationship and the former foreign secretary has praised what he said Donald Trump’s “many good qualities”.
“This is a guy who, when all is said and done, has got the US economy motoring along at about 3.6 per cent growth,” he said.
‘GOOD JOB’
But he has recently faced claims he hadn’t offered enough support for Sir Kim Darroch, who resigned from his position as ambassador to Washington after memos of him describing Trump as “inept” were leaked.
He hit back at accusations that he threw Sir Kim “under the bus” to strengthen his ties with the US President.
“I will stand up for our fantastic diplomats across the world.”
He said he believed Britain’s relationship with the United States was the “single most important strategic fact of our times”.
But he also said he was prepared to criticise the Trump administration.
“We in the UK do not agree with the position of the United States on global warming or their approach to the Iran nuclear deal,” he said.

Voting closes as 5pm on Monday, with the winner being announced on Tuesday and has been widely predicted that Mr Johnson will beat rival Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative Party leadership race.
It has been claimed party membership has surged to 180,000 as members sign up to stop Boris Johnson becoming PM.
