"Many Photos" - Bizarre moment millions of ‘crazy’ grasshoppers invade Las Vegas strip

MILLIONS of grasshoppers have descended on Las Vegas’ glitter strip in what is being dubbed the ‘Great Grasshopper Invasion of 2019′.

The insects – which are attracted to the casino metropolis’ abundance of light – have inundated the city streets and blanketed pavements.

The arrival of the grasshoppers has been attributed to unusually wet weather

The arrival of millions of migratory pallid-winged grasshoppers has been attributed to the unusually wet weather from months before.

The hopping insects have taken up residence in the city’s tourist attractions, even being picked up by weather radars, with many confusing the swarms on the map for rain clouds.

The National Weather Service Las Vegas tweeted on Saturday: “Some of you have been asking about the widespread radar returns the past few nights in Las Vegas.

“Radar analysis suggests most of these echoes are biological targets. This typically includes birds, bats, and bugs, and most likely in our case: Grasshoppers.”

Nevada State entomologist Jeff Knight told CBS News the grasshoppers are not dangerous, do not carry disease and don’t bite.

He said the insects migrated from southern Nevada and possibly from as far as Arizona and predicted they will be gone in several weeks.

The phenomenon has prompted hundreds of people to take to social media, uploading videos of the swarms of bugs.
