CAMBRIDGE and Oxford are once again ready to do battle in the Boat Race.
A three-length victory for the Cambridge crew in 2018 leaves them as the defending champions – and this year they have a potential record-breaker in their ranks.
Who is the oldest person to participate in the Boat Race?
THE current record holder for the oldest rower in the famous Thames dash is American Michael Wherley.
He was part of the winning 2008 Oxford crew, as well as being a two-time Olympian and three-time world champion.
Wherley was 36 years and 14 days old when he completed the event and was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 2014.
All competitors taking part in the Boat Race have to be studying at either Oxford and Cambridge at the time of the competition.
This year Wherley’s record is set to be broken by former Great Britain rowing hero James Cracknell, who is competing for Cambridge.
Cracknell is currently undertaking an MPhil degree in human evolution at Peterhouse College.
And if the 46-year-old completes the course as planned, he will take over from Wherley as the oldest ever rower and smash the record by almost a decade.
