"Many Photos" - How Brits could be jailed in Dubai for social media posts made years ago in another country as mum is arrested for calling ex-husband’s wife a ‘horse’

BRITS are being warned any offensive social media posts aimed at people living Dubai or the government could land them in jail and a huge fine when they visit there.

A woman from Surrey, Laleh Shahravesh, 55, is facing jail for calling her Dubai-based ex-husband an “idiot” and his new wife “a horse” under the Gulf state’s draconian social media laws.

Those who’ve fallen foul of the laws in the past include a Brit Yaseen Killick, jailed after venting anger on WhatsApp after being sold a car that broke down.

US fitness professional Jordan Branford was slapped with a nearly £60,000 fine after using the word “bitch” on Instagram, which his ex-wife believed was referring to her.

The 55-year-old Ms Shahravesh was detained with her daughter Paris, 14, when she went to Dubai for her ex’s funeral for the 2016 Facebook posts.

She learned that her former husband’s new wife Samah Al Hammadi had reported her to the Dubai police.

The single mum faces up to two years in jail and a fine of £50,000 under cybercrime laws of the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a part.

They make it an offence to insult others or even use language where people feel insulted.

The laws also forbid anything “defamatory” against the UAE and this can even include the reporting of a news article..

According to campaigners Detained in Dubai, in practice anyone who feels offended can report comments made to the local police.

They are warning even a WhatsApp conversation or private Facebook message could technically be considered a breach, if the insulted party were to discover the content.

The cybercrime laws potentially rendered almost every visitor a criminal

“The jurisdiction of the UAE’s cybercrime laws is essentially global,” said Detained In Dubai chief executive Radha Stirling.

“That means if person ever visits or even transits through Dubai, the entirety of their online activity throughout their life, may subject them to prosecution.

She warned that even deleted posts from a long time ago could be used.

“Say you post something criticising Dubai or a person there or even share it with someone else and some crazy person in Dubai doesn’t like it they can report it to the authorities,” she said.

“Even if it’s been deleted, if they’ve taken a screen shot then it still can be used. Then when the person turns up in Dubai they have no idea about the law and find themselves facing a jail or a fine.

Last year estate agent Mr Killick, 29, paid £6,000 for the VW Golf only for it to break down within hours.

He then discovered it was previously a write-off  so angrily messaged the seller to ask: “How do you sleep at night knowing you are ripping people off?’’

Yaseen was seized at Dubai airport as him and his wife headed to catch a flight home for Christmas and was also fined £1000.

US fitness professional Jordan Branford, was hit with a £60,000 fine and deportation for using the word “bitch” on Instagram which his estranged wife believed was referring to her.

Even though no-one was named specifically, the word is considered offensive in socially conservative Dubai and his wife reported him to the police.
