"Many Photos" - Firefighters use drone to tackle huge blaze burning over miles of moorland in Lancashire

FIREFIGHTERS are fighting a large blaze in Lancashire that covered miles of grassland tonight.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they had deployed a drone to assist in tackling the wildfire.

Hellish images showed the flames near a residential area

Terrifying pictures of the fire, near Bacup, shared on social media showed the fields alight and witnesses claimed they heard a “big bang” just before the inferno erupted around 10.30pm.

It is not yet known how the huge blaze started.

Eyewitness Lyndsay Dawson tweeted: “Bloody hell, that’s the worst I’ve ever seen the hills on fire.”

Francesca Dean added: “I live in Bacup, heard a big bang!

“Hope everything’s under control soon.”

News of the fire comes after nearby Saddleworth Moor was scorched by enormous wildfires on the hottest winter day ever in February.

A curtain of flames came within yards of homes as fire services called it “one of the biggest moorland fires we’ve ever had to deal with”.

At the time, station manager Adam Greenwood said: “It was one of the highest flame fronts we have seen with flames of up to two metres high and it was moving fast across the moorland.”

Specialist wildfire units raced to the scene to tackle the blaze – which some witnesses said was so intense they could feel the heat through their cars’ windscreens as they drove past.

Crews were forced to stay on the scene after the initial blaze was extinguished as moorland fires can easily reignite.
