"Many Photos" - 'Brexit Express' steam train runs more than 20 minutes behind

A 'Brexit Express' steam train which was meant to celebrate Britain's reak from Brussels faced delays of its own today.

The vintage rolling stock set off from York on a seven-hour journey to Bristol today with Brexiteers David Davis and Steve Baker greeting it on its way.

But trainspotters waiting to see it in Stalybridge had to wait as the train passed through more than 15 minutes late.

Mr Baker, a hardline member of the Brexiteer European Research Group, said he was 'delighted to join the Brexit Express'.

'There is a mood of cheery resolve,' he said.

According to tracking website Realtime Trains, the locomotive set off from York this morning, travelling via Stalybridge, Stockport, Crewe and Shrewsbury before reaching Bristol.

The tracking data showed it more than half an hour behind schedule when it passed Heaton Lodge Junction in Yorkshire.

However it had apparently recovered later in its journey and arrived in Bristol three minutes early.

On the first leg of its journey yesterday it had criss-crossed Britain again on a trip from Swansea to Sunderland, before it headed to York.

The locomotive, which was pulling several carriages, had British and European flags attached to its front.

Organisers had hoped the train would celebrate Britain's first full day outside the EU after the scheduled March 29 departure date.

But the deadlock in Parliament has forced Theresa May to ask for a delay until at least April 12 and possibly months or even years longer.

The railway ride was backed by businessman Jeremy Hosking who set up the lobby group Brexit Express.

Pulling the train today was the locomotive 70000 Britannia, with a nameplate reading 'Brexit Express' fixed to the front.

The steam locomotive was built in 1951 and worked trains in East Anglia, including King George VI's funeral train from Sandringham in 1952.

It was retired by British Rail in 1966 but has remained in action as a preserved locomotive.

In 2012 it pulled a royal train carrying Prince Charles.
