SAMSUNG’S 2019 Galaxy smartphone will come loaded with a superfast mobile connection that allows you to download 4K movies in mere seconds.
The South Korean firm’s Galaxy Note 10, due for release next year, looks likely feature 5G, the fifth generation of mobile networks tipped to be fast and reliable enough to replace your home broadband.
Renders of how Samsung’s 2020 smartphones could shape up were published by LetsGoDigital this week. They will follow the Samsung Galazy S10 and Note 10, due for release next year[/caption]
5G is the future of mobile internet – a major upgrade on the current 3G and 4G networks we use today.
Mobile carriers like EE and Vodafone need to get their networks ready for 5G, and phone makers need to install 5G modems in their phones.
A statement from US mobile network AT&T all-but confirmed it will offer a Samsung smartphone with 5G support in the second half of 2019.
“We’re pleased to announce we’re working with Samsung to bring another standards-based 5G device to AT&T customers in 2019,” the company said in a statement.

How fast is 5G internet?
Here's what you need to know...
- 5G handsets will provide significantly faster internet speeds than modern handsets
- Some users will be able to download several gigabits of data every second
- At speeds of 1 gigabit-per-second, it would take eight seconds to download 1 gigabyte of data
- Netflix says 4K video takes up about 7 gigabytes of space per hour of footage
- So downloading an hour-and-a-half Netflix film in 4K to watch offline would require roughly 10GB of space
- With a 5G connection, that would take just 1 minute and 20 seconds
- And regular HD footage takes up about 3GB of footage per hour, so the same movie could be nabbed in High Definition roughly half the time
- Intel rival Qualcomm’s own 5G chip – the Snapdragon X50 – promises around 4.5 gigabits-per-second speeds, based on testing
- That could cut a 4K movie download down to around 20 seconds, if networks can beam those sorts of speeds to actual users
“This smartphone from Samsung will be able to access both 5G mmWave and sub-6 GHz. We expect to offer this device in the second half of 2019.”
Samsung typically releases its latest Note handset in August or September each year, a few months after it unveils the newest Galaxy S model.
The Samsung Galaxy S10, expected to launch in Spring 2019, is also rumoured to feature 5G.
Verizon – another major US mobile network – confirmed last week that it would launch the first 5G-compatible Samsung handset early next year, all-but confirming that the S10 will come loaded with 5G connectivity.
A Samsung patent filed in April featured concept images of its plans for its 2020 smartphone range[/caption]
Following AT&T’s statement, it appears the Note 10 will follow suit.
Neither Verizon nor AT&T’s announcement explicitly lists each phone by name, but we can be pretty sure they refer to the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 based on Samsung’s steadfast approach to its phone release dates.
The S10 is rumoured to feature up to six cameras and a huge display, but little is known about the Note 10 at this stage.
Earlier this week, concept images revealed how Samsung’s 2020 smartphone models could shape up.

TOP STORIES IN TECH
3D renders created by LetsGoDigital reveal an edge-to-edge or ‘bezel-less’ screen that stretches over the sides of the handset.
These edges feature touch buttons that control the volume, cameras and more.
The designs were based on a patent filed to the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) in April by Samsung.
