New photo Geraint Thomas beats bookies' favourite Harry Kane to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year award

Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has been named as this year's BBC Sport's Personality of the Year, beating Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton into second place and bookies' favourite England football captain Harry Kane into third.

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, England cricketer James Anderson and skeleton racer Lizzy Yarnold were also nominated for this year's main gong.

The sporting stars were selected by a BBC SPOTY panel and Thomas won after a public vote.

He is the first Welshman to win the prestigious award since footballer Ryan Giggs in 2009.

The BBC had denied fans the chance to campaign for their favourite sports star by concealing the shortlist for Sport Personality of the Year until tonight's live show in Birmingham.

Tyson Fury was the big omission when the nominees for this year's award were announced.

The heavyweight was the bookmakers' fourth favourite for the prize after his dramatic draw with Deontay Wilder earlier this month but failed to make the shortlist of six.

And England manager Gareth Southgate was unanimously awarded the Coach of the Year award, with the gong presented by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

Southgate said on stage: 'We've had an incredible group of players who have acquitted themselves brilliantly and have an incredible support team.

'Ultimately we didn't quite win and I'm conscious of that. Until we all win we won't rest, sit back and be satisfied.

'Sport is about inspiring people and bringing people enjoyment, we loved the journey with all of you.'

Tennis legend Billie Jean King was given the lifetime achievement by her friend, fellow tennis player and BBC presenter Sue Barker

Throughout the night, the contenders talked about the motivations that have driven them to achieving their outstanding levels of success.

The first prize of the night, the Helen Rollason award, was given to Billy Monger who was a rising star in racing until a horrific crash at Donington Park in April 2017, aged just 17.

Despite surviving, Billy had to have both legs amputated, ending his dreams of being an F1 world champion.

Yet he fought back bravely and was able to make an almost-miraculous return to the sport, becoming a Formula 3 driver and finished third in this year's championships.

American tennis great Billie Jean King was given the lifetime achievement by her friend, fellow tennis player and BBC presenter Sue Barker.

King, now 75, won 39 grand slam titles, including 20 at Wimbledon, but she was also a pioneer for gender equality in sport and famously took on male player, and self-confessed chauvinist, Bobby Riggs in the 1973 'battle of the sexes'.

Tyson Fury's omission from Sports Personality of the Year shortlist prompts anger and outrage among fans

Tyson Fury's omission from the six-person shortlist for this year's Sports Personality of the Year has prompted outrage on social media.

The heavyweight boxer fought back from drugs, weight and mental health issues to put on a spectacular display against WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Though the match ended in a draw, his incredible comeback from crippling depression and a suicide attempt inspired people around the world.

His trainer Ben Davidson took to Twitter to blast his fighter's omission, saying: 'What an opportunity for @BBCSPOTY to do there part in raising awareness for mental health and many other things, to help inspire people.

'For a man to come back from where he has, while at the same time saving thousands of lives along with inspiring millions. Shame on them.'

The boxer had been the bookies' fourth favourite before the shortlist was announced.

Despite the snub, the boxer gave a stirring speech to celebrate his comeback.

He smiled as he insisted he should've been named the WBC champion before discussing his mental health issues.

Fury was invited to challenge Wilder and Anthony Joshua by presenter Gary Lineker but declined to offer hope to people suffering with mental health problems.

He said: ' I wanted to show the world anything was possible. If I can get through it then so can you.'

The Italian received his award from Tommy Fleetwood, with whom he formed a memorable partnership as Europe thrashed the United States at the Ryder Cup in Paris.

Molinari became the first European to win five out of five points in the team contest but also enjoyed remarkable solo success this season, becoming the first Italian to win a major with victory at the Open.

Kirsty Ewen, a swimming coach from Inverness, received the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero award from former Olympic heptathlon champion Jess Ennis-Hill and wheelchair racer Kare Adenegan, who was named Young Sports Personality of the Year in October.

Ewen was chosen from 15 regional winners and has used her love for swimming to help her deal with mental health issues.

Gareth Southgate and Fury led the stars arriving at tonight's ceremony.

The popular England manager, who won the night's third award, was all smiles as he arrived at the Genting Arena in Birmingham and was followed by a whole host of sporting stars.

And Fury, an enormous grin lighting up his face, looked to have made a full recovery from his titanic tussle with Deontay Wilder for the WBC World Heavyweight Championship on December 1.

Jessica Ennis, Paula Radcliffe and Amy Dowden were among the other British sporting heroes in attendance.

Kane played at the 2018 World CUp in Russia, captaining England to their third semi-final in history.

The 25-year-old won the Golden Boot, finishing as the top goalscorer in the competition.

He became only the second English player to do so, after Gary Lineker in 1986.

Dina Asher-Smith

The bookmakers have her as one of the favourites after she became the first British track and field star to claim a treble of gold medals at a major championships.

Millions watched her performances on the BBC, transforming her into a star and role model.

Geraint Thomas 5/2

Thomas, 32, was the third British rider to win the race and the sixth in seven years.

He'd been cycling in the shadow of Team Sky teammate Chris Froome up until his victory.

It marks a remarkable comeback for the Welshman after he crashed out at the ninth stage after suffering a broken collarbone last year.

Lizzy Yarnold 28/1

With consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, Lizzy Yarnold is the most successful British Winter Olympian and the most successful Olympic skeleton athlete of all time from any nation.

The 30-year-old was selected to be one of the two women skeleton drivers representing Britain at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

She went on to become the first person to defend an Olympic gold in skeleton and the first British athlete to defend a Winter Olympic title.

James Anderson 250/1

Veteran England fast bowler James Anderson has been a leading light in test cricket for many years now.

This season, he became the fast bowler with the most wickets in the history of Test cricket.

The 36-year-old has never been nominated for the award before and many fans will see this as fair reward for a record-breaking career.

Lewis Hamilton 7/2

Lewis Hamilton, 33, became a five-time Formula One world champion this year after another spectacular season.

He is a previous winner of the prestigious SPOTY award, receiving it in 2014.

Hamilton is hoping to go on and emulate the legendary Michael Schumacher, who is currently the only driver to have seven world championships.

For the first time in its 65-year history, names of athletes in the running for the prize won't be made public in advance.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said it will add another level of excitement to the awards show, which sees 12,000 paying spectators gather at the Genting Arena in Birmingham

She added that the change meant stars from the most popular sport don't always scoop the prize.

But critics say it denies fans the chance to co-ordinate voting campaigns for their favourites.

Boxer Tyson Fury's chances could be harmed by the alteration. He's one of this year's favourites after coming back from the brink of suicide to fighting a thrilling contest against US heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Billy Monger, 18, who lost both legs in racing crash but still returned to motorsport wins the Helen Rollason award

The first award of this year's Sport Personality of the Year, the Helen Rollason award, was given to Billy Monger who was a rising star in racing until a horrific crash at Donington Park in April 2017, aged just 17.

Despite surviving, Billy had to have both legs amputated, ending his dreams of being an F1 world champion.

After his crash last year, Monger was stuck in his vehicle for 90 minutes until he could be airlifted to a hospital in Nottingham, but tragically medics could not save his legs.

His mother Amanda said the crash was 'all your nightmares rolled into one' but the hospital staff had helped them through it.

The incident shook the motorsport community and led to a fundraising campaign for his rehabilitation and recovery that raised more than £800,000.

The beaming teenager was given his award by Formula One legend and SPOTY 2018 nominee Lewis Hamilton.

Chances of winning for Tyson Fury (left after his heavyweight bout against Deontay Wilder) could be hampered following the change

But a string of sexist and homophobic comments in 2015 damaged his public image.

Without knowing whether Fury is on the shortlist, his fans have been unable to co-ordinate a campaign to win the public back over.

The new change could also see lesser-known sports stars miss out on the opportunity to win the gong.

Last year the relatively unknown Superbike World champion Jonathan Rea finished runner-up for the award after his fans lobbied for him online.

Slater told The Times: 'If you are going to put a vote out to the public, you run that in the most robust way you can.

'It can simply be there are more fans of one sport than another or somebody plays for a club with a big fanbase.

'But the vote on the night is something very dear to the show. It's an opportunity for the British public to vote and that won't change.'

Favourites to win the award this year include England captain Harry Kane, whose goals help take the country to the semi-final of the World Cup; Dina Asher-Smith, the female sprinter who won gold at this year's Commonwealth Games; Geraint Thomas, the first Welshman to win the Tour de France; and Lizzy Yarnold, skeleton racer and Winter Olympian.

Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas given new trophy after the Welshman's old one was stolen

Cycling star Geraint Thomas has received a new Tour de France trophy - after the original was stolen at an event in Birmingham .

The Welshman pedalled his way to a historic Tour de France victory earlier this year but thieves nabbed his prize at a cycling show.

Now, Thomas, 32, has been handed a replica trophy until police track down the original Coupe Omnisports.

Team Sky tweeted to thank the organiser of the Tour de France, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), for getting the new trophy - which is the same as the black and gold handmade one presented to the Welshman in the summer.

Thomas, from Cardiff, also tweeted a picture of himself posing with his new silverware.

He said: 'What a great prize!'

Thomas will be hoping to add the BBC Sports Personality of the Year to his 2018 trophy haul after his achievements earned him a nomination.

At the time of the theft in September, Thomas appealed for its return and said: 'The trophy means a lot to me and to the team.'

Richard Hemington, managing director of Pinarello, said the company had apologised to Thomas, while West Midlands Police said it was investigating.
