Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has been named as this year's BBC Sport's Personality of the Year, beating Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton into second place and bookies' favourite England football captain Harry Kane into third.
Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, England cricketer James Anderson and skeleton racer Lizzy Yarnold were also nominated for this year's main gong.
The sporting stars were selected by a BBC SPOTY panel and Thomas won after a public vote.
He is the first Welshman to win the prestigious award since footballer Ryan Giggs in 2009.
The BBC had denied fans the chance to campaign for their favourite sports star by concealing the shortlist for Sport Personality of the Year until tonight's live show in Birmingham.

Tyson Fury was the big omission when the nominees for this year's award were announced.
The heavyweight was the bookmakers' fourth favourite for the prize after his dramatic draw with Deontay Wilder earlier this month but failed to make the shortlist of six.
And England manager Gareth Southgate was unanimously awarded the Coach of the Year award, with the gong presented by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.
Southgate said on stage: 'We've had an incredible group of players who have acquitted themselves brilliantly and have an incredible support team.
'Ultimately we didn't quite win and I'm conscious of that. Until we all win we won't rest, sit back and be satisfied.
'Sport is about inspiring people and bringing people enjoyment, we loved the journey with all of you.'

Throughout the night, the contenders talked about the motivations that have driven them to achieving their outstanding levels of success.
The first prize of the night, the Helen Rollason award, was given to Billy Monger who was a rising star in racing until a horrific crash at Donington Park in April 2017, aged just 17.
Despite surviving, Billy had to have both legs amputated, ending his dreams of being an F1 world champion.
Yet he fought back bravely and was able to make an almost-miraculous return to the sport, becoming a Formula 3 driver and finished third in this year's championships.

American tennis great Billie Jean King was given the lifetime achievement by her friend, fellow tennis player and BBC presenter Sue Barker.
King, now 75, won 39 grand slam titles, including 20 at Wimbledon, but she was also a pioneer for gender equality in sport and famously took on male player, and self-confessed chauvinist, Bobby Riggs in the 1973 'battle of the sexes'.
Italian golfer Francesco Molinari was the worthy winner of the overseas sports personality prize, which has been re-branded as World Sport Star of the Year and was decided by a global, online vote.
The Italian received his award from Tommy Fleetwood, with whom he formed a memorable partnership as Europe thrashed the United States at the Ryder Cup in Paris.
Molinari became the first European to win five out of five points in the team contest but also enjoyed remarkable solo success this season, becoming the first Italian to win a major with victory at the Open.
Kirsty Ewen, a swimming coach from Inverness, received the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero award from former Olympic heptathlon champion Jess Ennis-Hill and wheelchair racer Kare Adenegan, who was named Young Sports Personality of the Year in October.
Ewen was chosen from 15 regional winners and has used her love for swimming to help her deal with mental health issues.
Gareth Southgate and Fury led the stars arriving at tonight's ceremony.
The popular England manager, who won the night's third award, was all smiles as he arrived at the Genting Arena in Birmingham and was followed by a whole host of sporting stars.
And Fury, an enormous grin lighting up his face, looked to have made a full recovery from his titanic tussle with Deontay Wilder for the WBC World Heavyweight Championship on December 1.
Jessica Ennis, Paula Radcliffe and Amy Dowden were among the other British sporting heroes in attendance.

Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas is also believed to be in contention for the main prize, pictured arriving with his wife Sara Elen
For the first time in its 65-year history, names of athletes in the running for the prize won't be made public in advance.
Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said it will add another level of excitement to the awards show, which sees 12,000 paying spectators gather at the Genting Arena in Birmingham.
She added that the change meant stars from the most popular sport don't always scoop the prize.
But critics say it denies fans the chance to co-ordinate voting campaigns for their favourites.
Boxer Tyson Fury's chances could be harmed by the alteration. He's one of this year's favourites after coming back from the brink of suicide to fighting a thrilling contest against US heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Chances of winning for Tyson Fury (left after his heavyweight bout against Deontay Wilder) could be hampered following the change
But a string of sexist and homophobic comments in 2015 damaged his public image.
Without knowing whether Fury is on the shortlist, his fans have been unable to co-ordinate a campaign to win the public back over.
The new change could also see lesser-known sports stars miss out on the opportunity to win the gong.
Last year the relatively unknown Superbike World champion Jonathan Rea finished runner-up for the award after his fans lobbied for him online.
Slater told The Times: 'If you are going to put a vote out to the public, you run that in the most robust way you can.

Harry Kane is the favourite to take home this year's award after captaining England to a World Cup semi-final
'It can simply be there are more fans of one sport than another or somebody plays for a club with a big fanbase.
'But the vote on the night is something very dear to the show. It's an opportunity for the British public to vote and that won't change.'
Favourites to win the award this year include England captain Harry Kane, whose goals help take the country to the semi-final of the World Cup; Dina Asher-Smith, the female sprinter who won gold at this year's Commonwealth Games; Geraint Thomas, the first Welshman to win the Tour de France; and Lizzy Yarnold, skeleton racer and Winter Olympian.
