There were shocking scenes of hooliganism last night as Stoke City fans trashed Port Vale's stadium, attacked police and pelted the pitch with bottles and flares.
More than 4,000 tickets had been sold to Stoke fans for the first Potteries derby in 16 years, even though it featured their Under-21 side.
A febrile atmosphere at the Checkatrade Trophy clash erupted into violence as away fans ripped seats from the stands and launched them at police, along with coins and cigarette lighters.
At least 12 people were arrested, while one steward was seen being led away injured, apparently after being hit by a chair.
Police said more arrests are expected in the coming days after they have scoured through CCTV footage to identity the yobs.

Images showed a line of police clad in riot gear holding the boundary of the pitch after the final whistle, as Stoke fans were held back to prevent a repeat of the fights between rival fans that took place before the game.
Clashes inside the stadium followed, with some officers having to use truncheons to hold the hooligans back. A nearby pub was also trashed.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Jones, of Staffordshire Police, said: 'The behaviour of a significant section of those in the away stand was unacceptable and I would like to reassure the local community that we will do all we can to bring those responsible to justice.'
Port Vale Supporters' Club chairman Mark Porter, who was inside the ground, said: 'It was absolutely appalling.
'Some of the away 'fans' clearly came simply to cause trouble. They were throwing bottles, lighters, coins, seats - you name it.
'Dozens of seats have been wrecked. They are an absolute disgrace to their club and should be banned.'
Stoke fans condemned the appalling scenes on Twitter, with Rich Riley posting: 'A lot of our Stoke fans need to give their heads a wobble... embarrassing... yet they'll think it's all great stuff... very unsavoury.'
Another tweeted: 'No need for half of what I witnessed. Banter is one thing the rest should stay in the 80s.'
