JEFFERSON Airplane star Marty Balin has died aged 76.
The singer-guitarist co-founded the San Francisco psychedelic rock band in 1965.

According to a statement released on Balin’s Facebook page Friday, the singer died on Thursday with his wife, Susan Joy Balin, “by his side.”
Marty was a struggling folk guitarist on the San Francisco scene when he formed a band with Paul Kantner.
He co-wrote five songs on their breakthrough LP Surrealistic Pillow and his tenor voice became a key part of their signature sound.
He is also a longtime member of Jefferson Starship, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

His wife said in a statement: “Marty and I shared the deepest of love — he often called it Nirvana — and it was.
“But really, we were all touched by his love. His presence will be within my entire being forever.”
He had a recent history of serious health problems and in March 2016, he underwent open-heart surgery in New York.
Marty later sued Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital claiming negligence caused him to suffer a paralysed vocal cord, loss of his left thumb and half of his tongue, bedsores, and kidney damage.
Balin was beaten unconscious by Hell’s Angels while performing at the infamous Altamont festival – which featured the Rolling Stones on the bill.
