New photo Collingwood's banner shreds as the team runs on to the MCG in front of nearly 100,000 fans

With Collingwood's team song blaring over the speakers, the Magpies ran out of their change rooms to make their triumphant return to the AFL Grand Final.

In front of nearly 100,000 fans, the team came out of the Melbourne Cricket Ground ahead of first bounce of the blockbuster, only to find their banner in tatters.

The banner was torn apart by the wind only seconds before the team were due to come onto the field and run through it.

AFL club banners are prepared by the corresponding team's cheer squad, a small group of fans who sit behind the goals every game.

The team took a moment to stand before the banner, with captain Scott Pendlebury speaking to his team, before they did their lap of the MCG.

Holding the remains of the banner, one member of the cheer squad was in tears.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley took a moment to comfort the inconsolable fan, as the rest of the support squad cheered on their team.

Before it tore, the banner read: 'We're side by side through thick & thin, that's why we're here, that's why we'll win.'
