Old English epic poem Beowulf is the work of a single author, say researchers.
Scientists used computers to analyse the text and noticed grammatical and stylistic similarities throughout – suggesting it was the work of one person.
This included consistent use of punctuation, similar vocabulary and the creation of unusual words made by joining two mundane words together.

One example of the latter was 'bone-house' – written 'ban-hus' – which the authors say refers to the human body.
Beowulf – one of the most famous Old English tales – tells of a hero rescuing the Danes from a fearsome monster and its mother before he is killed by a dragon.
Some scholars have argued the poem is two stories which were at some point combined. The second half was said to have been written in a markedly different tone to the first.
However, the new study, published in journal Nature Human Behaviour, used computer analysis to detect patterns that had previously evaded researchers.
Co-author Leonard Neidorf, of Nanjing University in China, said his team had used some of the 'most sophisticated computational methods available for author identification'.
