"Many Photos" - The amazing red and white pitch made from recycled beer cups from 2018 World Cup in Russia

RUSSIA has created a football pitch made entirely out of recycled beer cups from the 2018 World Cup.

Over 50,000 plastic containers were collected during the month-long tournament across stadiums and fan zones in the nation.

And they have now been put to a truly unique use.

Around 2.5million tons of plastic was taken from the cups and used to make the Budweiser ReCup Arena in Sochi.

Building the pitch was part of an awareness drive to be “socially responsible” with plastic, according to those behind the scheme.

Budweiser was the official beer sponsor of the World Cup – and their marketing director, Konstantin Tamirov, has revealed his joy at putting the cups to good use.

UP FOR THE CUP

Tamirov said: “The World Cup is a celebration for millions of fans not only in Russia, but around the world.

“Throughout the tournament, Budweiser surprised fans with its activations, gave them euphoric emotions, so we decided to create a unique facility – Budweiser ReCup Arena – specifically to extend this experience.

“Hopefully, this pitch will remind us of the past tournament and, probably, will help someone start a promising football career.”

Meanwhile, former World Cup winner Marco Materazzi added: “The 2018 World Cup in Russia has been recognised as the best ever.

“For a month, millions of tourists from all over the world were united by the real football celebration atmosphere.

All in all, 3.2million cups were distributed to fans – but many were taken home by supporters as a souvenir.
