"Many Photos" - Cars explode in fireball in horror crash inside a Croatian road tunnel

This is the moment a huge fireball exploded inside a road tunnel after a BMW skidded onto the wrong side of the road and ploughed into another car.

In CCTV footage the 24-year-old BMW driver, identified as Tihomir Loncar, appears to lose control and spins across the road before colliding with the Citroen.

The Citreon was being driven through the Sverti Ilija Tunnel near Zagvozd in Croatia by Ante Jozic, 52, who had recently been promoted to archbishop.

The cars burst into flames as they collide and the fireball fills the tunnel in shocking footage, taken from a CCTV camera in the southern Croatian borough of Zagvozd. 

The impact of the crash - at around 6pm on April 7  - is reported to have propelled the BMW's engine 131 feet from the vehicle.

Both drivers were rushed to hospital in critical conditions.  

The archbishop underwent two surgeries and his condition has since stabilised. He suffered injuries to his chest, abdomen, arms and legs.

However, Tihomir Loncar died in hospital. 

A friend told local media: 'We will always remember him as a guy who loved life and enjoyed every second. Cars were his main passion in life.' 

The impact reportedly threw the BMW's engine 131 feet from the vehicle.
