"Many Photos" - The Queen indulges her love of horse racing with official visit to top yard in Somerset

THE Queen will today indulge her love of horse racing as she visits a top yard in Somerset.

The 92-year-old smiled as she arrived in Somerset this morning – greeted by cheering crowds before heading off to see horses on parade.

During the visit, the Queen is expected to meet champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who won the Queen Mother Champion Chase with Call Equiname in 1999.

It’s a visit the monarch is sure to enjoy, having had a long, keen interest in horses and been a horse rider herself.

While the Queen doesn’t gamble on the races, she is said to read the Racing Post over breakfast every morning.

And she even owns horses herself, including Pall Mall that won the classic 2000 Guineas in 1958. More recently, her racehorse Estimate won the Doncaster Cup in 2014.

Today, the Queen will visit Manor Farm Stables, King’s Bruton School, and Hauser & Wirth Somerset after arriving in the county by Royal Train.

At the stables in Ditcheat The Queen will meet champion trainer Paul Nicholls before touring the yard and viewing the horses on parade.

The Queen will also hear from representatives from the University of Bath working on research projects on equestrian sport spinal injuries and racehorse welfare. She will then visit King’s Bruton, a co-educational school founded in 1519.

To mark 500 years of the school, the Queen will officially open the school’s new music centre. Before departing, the Queen will also officially name a new Avon and Somerset Police horse.

She will also meet police horse Jubilee – the horse that she named during her last visit to Somerset.

Finally, she will visit Hauser & Wirth Somerset, a gallery and multi-purpose arts centre located at Durslade Farm.

It is her first visit to Somerset since the 2012 Jubilee tour of the UK.

HORSING AROUND

The Queen has been around horses from her early childhood, with her first riding lesson taking place when she was just four at the Buckingham Palace Mews.

She was given a Shetland pony named Peggy as a child, going on to follow the sport throughout her life.

Her passion has also been passed down to the rest of the royal family, with Princess Anne and Zara Tindall both known for their equestrian talents.

The royal engagement comes just a few short weeks before the Grand National is staged next month.

Fans are expected to pack out Aintree and punters up and down the country gather around their televisions eager to find out if they’ll strike lucky from a field of 40 runners.

Avon and Somerset Police’s Chief Constable Andy Marsh and Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens will be among a number of guests who will meet the Queen.

Superintendent Rhys Hughes, police commander for the visit, said: “This is an opportunity for the people of Somerset to see Her Majesty for the second time in seven years.

“We have to be mindful of the safety of both the royal visitors and the public on such occasions, while minimising the amount of disruption for those wishing to go about their normal daily business.

“Our operation for the visit will follow well-rehearsed plans, which have involved several weeks of planning, working with partner organisations including Buckingham Palace, local agency partners and the Metropolitan Police.

“This is likely to be one of the biggest events in the Somerset area for some time and we are sure the people of Somerset will give Her Majesty a warm welcome.”
