"Many Photos" - Japan's Emperor Akihito looks cheerful as he waves Kyoto goodbye after announcing his abdication

Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko waved goodbye to the crowds in Kyoto as they made their way back to Tokyo after a four-day trip around the country.

Akihito, 85, looked relaxed in a grey three-piece suit as his wife, 84, looked elegant in a dove grey jacket and matching skirt and hat.

The Emperor has announced he will be abdicating on 30 April, and as one monarch retires, another shall rise: Crown Prince Naruhito will ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1, thus resetting the Japanese calendar.

Japan will reveal the name of the country's next era on April 1.

The Emperor and Empress have spent the last four days in Kyoto, where they honoured some of their last official duties.

The royal couple arrived in Kyoto on 25 March, where they waved at well-wishers before attending a tea party at the Imperial Palace.

'I'm very glad to spend time with you in Kyoto, where my ancestors lived,' the Emperor said.

On March 26, the day he announced his abdication, the Emperor and his wife were in the prefecture of Nara, where they visited the mausoleum of Emperor Jimmu, before meeting with officials and greeting crowds at the Kashiharajinju-Mae Station.

The next day, the royal couple went to view the cherry blossoms at the Gyoen National Garden, the Imperial Palace Park. They then had tea with the staff members of the imperial household.

Akihito shocked the country in 2016 when he signalled his desire to take a back seat, citing his age and health problems.

In February Emperor Akihito urged his country to be open to the outside world at a ceremony marking 30 years of his reign.

Akihito, who is the first Japanese monarch to abdicate in 200 years, has embraced the more modern role as a symbol of the state imposed after World War II ended.

He also expanded his role by actively travelling across Japan, particularly to meet with victims of natural disasters and visit sites that had been affected by World War II.

During his birthday celebration in December, the emperor said he will not forget those trips with his wife and thanked those countries for welcoming them, despite their bitter memories of the war.

'I am grateful to each of those countries for welcoming us with warm hospitality,' he said.

Each new emperor brings his own Japanese Imperial era. For instance, before Akhito ascended the throne in 1989, the country lived in the Shōwa era from 1926 to 1989. This era took the name of emperor Emperor Shōwa, but not all eras are named after its Emperor.

Japan currently lives in the era of Heisei (which means 'Peace everywhere'). The country will enter a new era when Nahurito ascends the Chrysantheum throne on 1 May, and the new name will be announced on Monday 1 April.

His son Crown Prince Naruhito has indicated he plans to follow in his father's footsteps.

Naruhito pledged to maintain the royal household's close ties to the public and 'fulfil my duty as a symbol of the state.'

On Monday, Princess Kako of Akishino, the granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, paid tribute to her ancestors during a visit to the Musashi Imperial Graveyard, days after announcing she is taking on full-time royal duties.

Just three days after her graduation, Kako, visited the Mausoleum of Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun in Hachioji, Tokyo, looking elegant in a dove grey dress and stylish trilby.
