UK driving licences may no longer be valid in the EU after a no-deal Brexit.

Here is what may happen should Britain crash out of the union without making arrangements.

Will UK driving licences be valid in Europe after Brexit?

After a no-deal Brexit UK drivers may have to get an international driving permit if they want to drive in some European countries.

On January 14 the Government quietly announced released new guidance today warning Brits their current driving licences will be useless on the continent in a No Deal scenario.

The department said: “If you are a UK licence holder living in the EU you should exchange your UK driving licence for a local EU driving licence before 29 March 2019.

“From that date, in the event that there is no EU exit deal, you may have to pass a driving test in the EU country you live in to be able to carry on driving there.

“You should consider exchanging your UK driving licence for an EU driving licence as soon as possible.

There are around 1.3million Brits living in other EU countries who could be affected by the change in rules.

Anyone planning to drive in the EU as a tourist will need to spend £5.50 on an international permit if we leave without a deal.

What is an International Driving Permit?

If British licences are no longer recognised in Europe after the Brexit deal is signed, drivers may be forced to purchase an International Driving Permit (IDP), which would allow them to drive in the EU for up to 12 months.

Recommended for around 140 countries worldwide, the IDP is recognised by the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and acts as temporary proof of driving ability for travellers.

An International Driving Permit isn’t the same as an International Driving Licence (IDL) – which isn’t a legally recognised document.

An IDP is already required for many nations including Egypt, India, Japan, Brazil and Argentina, although the US, Australia and Canada accept the current pink UK driving licence.

To apply for an IDP you must be over 18 and hold a valid UK driving licence.

How can you get an International Driving Permit?

Available from Post Offices and motoring organisations like the AA and RAC, the permit will cost drivers £5.50.

IDPs need to be applied for within three months of travelling abroad, and they aren’t a legally recognised document on their own.

Drivers that fail to show both their UK licence and an IDP while overseas could face heavy fines.

Check what is required in the country you are visiting before travelling.

Members of Parliament have already suggested licences should replace current EU flags with the Union Jack and additional regional banners, while it is likely European branding on number plates will be removed in favour of traditional “GB” stickers.

A spokesman for the Department for Transport told Auto Express: “Our aim is to reach an agreement with the EU for mutual licence recognition after Brexit.
