A prison officer smuggled drugs into a prison in her underwear for a convicted killer with whom she had fallen in love.

Her role was uncovered when a specialist police unit smashed a prison smuggling ring which involved prison worker Farr, an inmate, the inmate's girlfriend and another man outside prison.

Gemma Farr, from Draycott in Derbyshire, worked in a prisoner rehabilitation role at HMP Dovegate in Staffordshire for seven years.

She has now been jailed herself, after being caught abusing her position to deliver contraband to prisoners.

Rumours began to swirl in September 2017 that Farr had fallen in love with prisoner serving a life sentence for a killing. 

Prison bosses alerted police after suspicions were raised over Farr's conduct and her routine of regularly leaving the prison grounds.

Investigators found the 37-year-old arranged regular meetings with Salford man Peter Cochrane in nearby pub car parks where the banned items were handed over.

In police interviews Farr, from Draycott in Derbyshire, indicated that she smuggled the consignments into jail by hiding them in her underwear.

Analysis of her phone revealed more than 1,500 points of contact − including calls, texts and WhatsApp messages − between June and September 2017.

A number were suspected of being to a 'pool phone' used secretively by prisoners.

Inside the prison, inmate Ricky Walsh, 34, was found trying to flush a Samsung handset down his cell toilet during a lockdown search.

He is serving a minimum 10-year sentence for robbery and gun possession.

At Birmingham Crown Court yesterday Farr was jailed for 32 months after admitting conspiring to supply steroids and phones into prison. A third charge of misconduct in a public office was left to lie on file.

Walsh, who was the inside man orchestrating the flow of drugs and phones into Dovegate, will be sentenced at a later date.

The money was funnelled through Walsh's partner Louise Brierley.

Brierley, 34, from Manchester, was ordered to carry out 200 hours' unpaid work after admitting money laundering by taking deposits into her bank account from associates of prisoners who used smuggling ring.

Peter Cochrane, from Salford, who gave Gemma Farr the goods in pub car parks,  was handed an eight-month jail term for his part in the supply conspiracy.

The case was investigated by the Regional Prison Investigation Team, part of the West Midlands' Regional Organised Crime Unit. It was set up in August 2017 and has now made 20 successful prosecutions against prisoners or prison staff.

Detective Constable Stephanie Petersen, said: 'This latest conviction is the result of a year-long investigation.

'The group involved in the conspiracy included a serving prison officer, a convicted prisoner, the prisoner's partner and an associate used to transport the illicit items.

'This sends a clear message to all those who considering smuggling illegal items into a prison: whatever your role we will investigate offences and the perpetrators risk significant prison sentences.'
