A PATIENT injected himself with his own semen in a bizarre attempt to cure his back pain – leaving doctors baffled.

The 33-year-old devised the grotty cure himself – seemingly without any medical advice or evidence it would work.

The patient was left with painful swelling in his arm where he had injected himself with his own semen every month for a year-and-a-half[/caption]

He was admitted to hospital in Dublin after a huge abscess developed on his forearm – where he had been pumping his ejaculate for a year-and-a-half.

Docs found the swollen rash had been caused by cellulitis – a serious bacterial infection that can cause severe pain and is potentially fatal if left untreated.

A report on the case published in the Irish Medical Journal described his weird habit as “dangerous”.

MONTHLY DOSE

Dr Lisa Dunne wrote: “He had devised this ‘cure’ independent of any medical advice.

“He revealed he had injected one monthly ‘dose’ of semen for 18 consecutive months using a hypodermic needle which had been purchased online.”

The patient’s back pain had been caused after damaging muscles when he lifted a heavy steel object.

But his bizarre homemade remedy had no pain-relieving effects.

Doctors were able to treat him for his back pain and his condition quickly improved after a short hospital stay.

But the patient discharged himself from Adelaide and Meath Hospital before doctors had a chance to remove the semen from his arm.

The ejaculate had leaked into his soft tissue because of the botched injections.

FIRST OF ITS KIND

Dr Dunne added that the man had “failed multiple attempts at injecting the bodily fluid” in what he told doctors was an “innovative method to treat back pain”.

It was noted in the report that there are many known cases of people injecting foreign substances in suicide attempts.

But the semen case is believed to be the first of its kind.

Dr Dunne wrote: “The dangers of [injections] when carried out by the untrained layperson are highlighted as well as the vascular and soft tissue hazards surrounding the attempted injection of substances not intended for intravenous use.

Another study referenced in the report involved experiments in which human semen was injected into animals.

The 1945 research found the practice “yields completely negative results”.
