A FIREFIGHTER has been charged with arson after telling police he set two homes ablaze because he was bored.

Ryan Laubham served as a volunteer firefighter in in western Pennsylvania but was arrested and charged with intentionally setting the properties on fire last month.

A 19-year-old volunteer is facing with five counts of arson, criminal mischief and risking catastrophe,  in relation  to the fires, which occurred within a week of each other.

According to the complaint, nearby security cameras showed a man running into the fire hall shortly after the second fire was set, WPXI reported.

Laubham later admitted to starting the fires, telling investigators he did it because he was bored, according to the complaint. No injuries were reported in either fire.

He has been suspended from Munhall Volunteer Fire Station #4.

Laubham’s lawyer Casey White said: “He’s a young man who has a bright promising future. He’s nervous.

“This case comes down to his statement that he gave to the police.

“In order to explore our options in how that statement was given and the circumstances surrounding that statement, we’re not able to do that at this juncture.”

Last year it was reported three German firefighters loved their jobs so much they allegedly started a string of blazes just for the joy of putting them out.

The trio were said to have been involved in more than 30 arson attacks, causing nearly £2million of damage.

On one occasion, a crew from another station beat them to a car fire they started, so they set another one ablaze a couple of hours later.

A police spokesman said their motive was their sheer enjoyment of firefighting operations.

The three, aged 19, 21 and 22, are said to have admitted starting the fires.
