Imgur user, ironically named “buick” decided to trick out his son’s Grave Digger Power Wheels and holy shit, I want to be this guys kid! Ok, that’s kind of weird. Sorry dad. But seriously, this is bad ass on a whole new level. This kid must be drowning in popsicle sticks.
For reference, above is what a stock Grave Digger Power Wheels looks like. Honestly, even stock this thing is pretty kick ass. It’s about to kick a whole lot more ass though. I’ll let buick give the gritty details because I don’t know shit about this kind of stuff.
To see the whole build and read all his notes, be sure to check out buick’s full post.
Here’s most of the pile of parts that I started with. It’s a set of 16″ BKT tires, 8″ go kart rims, 4 on 4″ hub adapters, 1″ live axle with 1/4″ keyway, two axle bearings on weldable hangers, #35 chain, an axle sprocket and a variety of hardware. Not pictured: the rack and pinion steering box. This pile of parts was around $350, plus another $250ish in steering components, plus another $400ish in previous mods, plus the $400 power wheels base, plus another couple bucks in odds/ends/metal stock/etc. It was a pretty expensive project, but we love Grave Digger and I wanted to go big on this one.
Pile of parts on the work bench. I experimented with painting a spare wheel, but wasn’t happy with how it came out. I decided to leave them stock grey powder until everything is working. The autographs on the windshield are Adam and Ryan Anderson, two sons of the original Grave Digger driver, Dennis. We met them at a Monster Jam show and they really made my son’s day. Ryan chatted with us for a bit about power wheels mods and asked if we had seen the traxxas motors/soft spring mods for it. I told him that I developed those mods and he said he’d seen my articles and thanked me for taking time to make Grave Digger even cooler. Their boys also have modded 24v Grave Diggers that they race at Dennis’ Muddy Motorsports Park.
A little further on the mock up. Here you can see how I adapted the front spindles. The wheels have 5/8″ bearings and the stock spindles were 7/16″. A piece of 1/2″ CPVC pipe fit very tightly over the stock spindle and very tightly inside the wheel hub bearing. I hadn’t gotten to it yet in this pic, but later on I spaced the wheels out on the spindles using pieces of tubing I cut off the rear of the frame.
Full underside shot. You can see pretty much everything I added for the rubber tire mod here. The brake cable is still loose in this pic as I hadn’t made the hand brake handle yet.
Here’s a picture with the top off. You can see all the wiring for the ESC that I did as a previous project. It used to control 2x 775 Traxxas motors on stock gearboxes, but now it controls the one larger 24v 500w motor on a live axle. Oh yeah, it’ll sling some mud!
I also swapped out the stock headlights for some LED Halo fog lights. They’re 3″ across and fit perfectly in place of the stock lights. Much brighter and cooler looking.
This has been an ongoing project that started last Christmas. My son enjoys spending time in the shop and helping me with all sorts of projects. Yeah, his Christmas present wasn’t much of a surprise, other than I made him think it was going to take forever and not be ready to drive, but it’s really hard to hide something this size. Plus it’s more fun to have him involved. He particularly liked watching the welding (with his own helmet, of course).
Here’s a little .gif of it in action. He’s mudding up the yard, but grass is totally overrated anyways. Hope you’ve enjoyed our build! Follow us on Instagram for realtime updates on the other crazy projects we get into. http://www.instagram.com/PoppaFixIt
This kid is coming for your girlfriend and not even a stack of cars is going to stop him!

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
