New photo Remains of Pompeii’s ‘frozen in time’ horse discovered 2,000 years after Mount Vesuvius’ eruption

THE remains of a horse still in its harness have been unearthed in Pompeii – nearly 2,000 years after Mount Vesuvius’s catastrophic eruption that buried the town in ash.

Archaeologists have hailed the horse, which was tall and well groomed, as a find of “rare importance”.

The horse was saddled up and ready to ride – possibly to help rescue Pempeians fleeing the AD79 eruption.

Experts revealed the saddle was richly decorated with bronze trimmings.

It was found buried alongside the remains of two other horses at the Villa of the Mysteries, a Pompeii suburb which belonged to a high-ranking military magistrate or Roman general.

When it erupted, Vesuvius buried the town in millions of tonnes of volcanic debris.

Massimo Osanna, director of Pompeii’s archaeological park, said the horses came to a “fierce and terrible end” as they suffocated in the ash or boiling vapours of Vesuvius’s ash cloud.

The people harness to ride the horses were reduced to their skeletons in the heat of the blast.

The estate was first dug up early in the 20th Century but much of it was reburied and has since been targeted by looters.

Mr Osanna added: “The whole area will be excavated and returned to the public.”

Archaeologists digging at the luxurious villa, which overlooks the sea, also found wine presses, oven and incredible frescoes.

Mount Vesuvius, on the west coast of Italy, is the only active volcano in continental Europe and is thought to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
