THE sky above New York was tonight lit up by an errie blue glow that could be seen from across the city after a suspected power plant explosion.
Residents were stunned when the chilling glow emerged just after 9pm local time on Thursday.
Twitter was awash with clips showing the flickering light piercing through low-hanging cloud in the city.
It even led many to suspect an alien invasion.
But the Fire Department of New York confirmed through its dispatch radio it was responding to an explosion at a power facility in Astoria.
And footage from the scene showed intense light and smoke billowing from the Con Edison site in the Queen’s district.

Residents in the city reported power surges and outages.
A Con Edison spokesperson said on social media the company was “aware of the situation” and apologised to affected customers.
La Guardia Airport suffered a power outage and was closed tonight for inspection by safety officials.
