JOSE MOURINHO had no idea he was going to be sacked on Tuesday morning… he thought he’d be discussing Manchester United’s transfer policy.

The Special One, 55, was called to a meeting with Ed Woodward on Tuesday morning, but the ex-Chelsea chief was caught completely off guard, claim The Times.

Mourinho thought the Old Trafford supremo wanted to get a head-start on January dealings, only to be given the boot instead.

The Portuguese boss was hoping to have a chat regarding the potential buys of stars Douglas Costa and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Mourinho’s squad had been crying out for reinforcements next month – although new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told he’ll have to make do with loanees only.

Yet the ex-Real Madrid and Inter Milan chief was instead shown the door – despite the Glazer family taking an additional 25 per cent hit on his payoff.

Sacking Mourinho cost United a staggering £24million – proving just how desperate they were for a fresh start.

And it reaped instant rewards as Solskjaer took his squad to former club Cardiff, where they scored five times for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s reign.

The 5-1 win settled some nerves around Old Trafford – and even Paul Pogba was full of praise for arch-enemy Mourinho after the 5-1 victory.

Out of the blue, the World Cup winner said: “With Jose, we won trophies. We worked. I want to thank him for that.”
