New photo Hotel staff’s confessions reveal you could be drying yourself with used towels or sleeping under stained duvets

HOTELS are where you go to relax, unwind and not have a care in the world – you certainly don’t want to have to worry about what’s gone on in your room.

But worry you should.

Sun Online Travel has spoken to British hotel workers around the world about what really goes on behind the scenes.

Things that you thought were urban legends may actually be true – and it’s often because they have the least appreciated, lowest paid and most demanding role.

But some stories are so down-right disgusting, you may never look at a hotel in the same light again.

So before you check into your next hotel, check out some of the advice from these seasoned housekeepers:

Rewash cutlery and crockery before you use them

For hygiene reasons, you should wash everything that you’re putting near your mouth before you use it.

Don’t even give those mugs the benefit of the doubt – always wash before using.

Agnes, who works in 4-star hotel in Edinburgh, told Sun Online Travel: “I never did this myself, but others would use the same cloths to do the dishes in the room that they just cleaned the toilet of.

“The hotel never gave us enough cleaning equipment – they said it cost too much, so everyone had to improvise and work with what they were given.”

Ask for extra towels in your room

When booking your hotel, you’ll usually be asked if you have any special requests.

At this point, it’s wise to ask for an extra set of towels per person.

Martin, who spent a ski season working in high-end chalets in Courchevel, France, explained why.

He said: “The chalets never seemed to have enough towels. Our manager said the budget didn’t stretch to purchasing them so often.

“The chalets were pretty spread out, and I didn’t want to have to keep going back to the laundry to see if towels were ready, so I kept as many towels in the room as possible. “That included towels that had definitely been used by the previous guests.

“I’d even put them over the radiator so they could dry while I made the beds and cleaned the bathrooms.”

Anna, another worker at a fancy Belfast hotel, had similar experiences.

She told Sun Online Travel: “We cleaned the toilets with guest towels.

“The housekeeping manager knew we did this and didn’t approve but she didn’t provide any other cleaning materials – what were we supposed to do?”

Check your bed hasn’t been slept in

It may seem a bit neurotic to check whether your bed sheets are fresh, but sometimes you have to be that person.

You should look at your bed closely – regardless of whether you have paid £50 for the room or £500 – and check how clean and fresh your sheets and pillows really are.

Dan, who works in a motel in Mariposa, close to Yosemite National Park, told Sun Online Travel: “I could have 20 beds to change in a day – it’s back breaking work.

“So, if I see a bed that’s been used but it’s not been messed completely, I’ll just pull the sheets really tight and hope no one notices. It’s worked for me so far.”

Be aware that duvets are gross

Ignorance truly is bliss – that’s certainly the case when it comes to hotel duvets.

Paschal works at a motel in Twizel, situated on New Zealand’s south island.

He tries not to think about the true state of cleanliness of any hotel room he stays in.

Speaking to Sun Online Travel, he said: “We have duvets that we part wrap in new sheets every day, but there’s no system for actually washing the duvets.

“They’re meant to be white, but some have gone a jaundice yellow.

“They only get brought to the laundry if there’s a big stain and we know it will come off.

“If we don’t think it will come off, it simply stays on the bed waiting for the next guest.”

Housekeepers may go through your stuff

Housekeeping staff are generally paid minimum wage and they don’t often get to sample the finer things in life.

That is, until they walk into the bedrooms they have to clean.

Ash, a supervisor at a lodge in Nottingham, explained: “I love it when people have perfumes on display, especially ones I can’t afford.

“It means I get to try them out – a couple of sprays every day won’t hurt anyone.”

Then there are the housekeepers who have been in the industry for so long, they start mixing it up a bit.

Mary, who works in a three-star hotel in Sydney, told Sun Online Travel: “We get a lot of school trips and the kids are a pain.

“They can be so rude. So I get my revenge by hiding their phones in their rooms.

“My favourite is to hide it between the sheets in their bed when I’m remaking it.”

Earlier this year, Sun Online Travel reported that an investigation into one of the UK’s biggest hotel brands revealed the horrors behind the scenes.

Hidden cameras revealed that cleaners were using the same guest towels to clean the toilets, baths and sinks.

They were also supposed to clean each room in just 20 minutes.
