He made the revelation on a radio show in Spain where he has spent most of his life since retiring from football and made a name for himself as a leading sports journalist.

The 60-year-old said: “I would prefer not to have to fight this battle but regrettably I’m in that battle and I’m determined I’m going to beat it.”

The TV host appeared in more than 300 official games in England for five different clubs including Liverpool and Manchester City before three seasons in Spain with Osasuna.

He said he was diagnosed with cancer after discovering a lump in his armpit at the end of the October.

After the news broke, Liverpool posted on Twitter wishing their former player well in his battle against the disease.

The Reds wrote: “Liverpool FC would like to wish Michael Robinson well in his battle with cancer.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with our former player and his family at this time.”

Admitting the specialist who saw him told him: “Michael you’ve got cancer, a bad one, of the sort that are not curable”, he added: “I don’t remember the rest of what he told me because I was thinking I was in the middle of a nightmare.”

Metastatic cancer is cancer that has spread from where it started to another part of the body.

Carles Francino, presenter of the radio show Michael made his cancer announcement on, said before letting the ex-footballer speak: “My friend, our friend Michael Robinson has cancer.

“I’ve said it now. Now it’s the turn of Michael who gave me permission to tell you more.”

Robinson said: “On October 30 I had a lump in my armpit and when they removed it they gave me some terrible news, saying ‘Michael, you have cancer, a bad one, and it doesn’t have a cure.’

“I don’t remember the rest of what I heard because I thought I was in the middle of a nightmare and it wasn’t true.’

“They said I had a melanoma. Obviously melanoma normally is not in the armpit, it’’s in the skin.

“The metastasis had travelled and it showed itself up in my armpit.

“For a couple of days I didn’t really know what day it was. I thought it was a bad dream and in any case I thought it was minor and I would go to the hospital the following day and I’d be told, ‘We’ve made a mistake Michael’.

“One day, while I was having a beer, I told myself that science had spoken and I had a bad advanced cancer and the cancer had dictated a series of circumstances.

“I now have to decide how to live. I have that power.

“I wouldn’t want my children and my wife to say there was a Michael before the illness and a Michael after.”

Michael told how he had got a second opinion at the behest of his wife with a specialist recommended by Cristobal Belda, who was Head of Oncology at Madrid’s La Paz Hospital when golfer Seve Ballesteros was being treated for a brain tumour.

He added: “My oncologist is a Real Madrid supporter but I have called him Messi. He’s the father of immunotherapy and is saving lives, and he’s obviously going to save mine.

“I’m up for this battle and I’m learning a lot about myself, although of course I would have really preferred not to have to fight this.”
