CORONATION Street’s Johnny Connor will tell cops he was driving the car that hit Liz McDonald to save wife Jenny Connor.
Liz, played by Beverley Callard, is feared dead after Jenny drunkenly ran her over on Christmas Day.
Although the former Rovers Return landlady managed to walk away from the scene of the crash, she later collapsed in her flat.
With Jenny, actress Sally Ann Matthews, terrified about going down for the crime, actor Richard Hawley has revealed Johnny will take the flak for her.
He told The Daily Star: “It’s a no-brainer for Johnny and it would be for me too.
“I know it’s perverting the course of justice but it’s about love and protection of the people closest to you.
“Johnny knows she’s in this state because of what he did. But he can’t help what he did, it’s gone and everyone’s tried to move on from it.
“It’s mind-boggling what she’s been up to but drinking has been an issue. And I feel actually out of this comes a huge amount of truth – it’s only borne out of love.”
The storyline, which will play out in the New Year will see Johnny handing himself in for the crime.
But should he go down for the incident, Richard admitted he didn’t think Johnny would cope well behind bars.
He explained: “Johnny wouldn’t cope well in prison.
“He’d sit there with all this stuff in his head. He says he couldn’t cope and ‘would do what happened to Aidan’.
For now, fans of the hit ITV soap are waiting with bated breath to find out if Liz will pull through.

The only person who could save Liz is her on-off lover Mike, who she was going to see before she was hit.
As the credits started to roll last night, Liz was seen collapsed in a heap on the floor after clutching her head.
